Latest on the severe snow weather / cold in the Med

http://www.severe-weather.eu/news/adriatic-effect-snow-over-e-italy-december-30-31-2014/

Picture number 6 impressive, shows big snow drifts in Italy

Note to, snow in Algeria in Africa.

Looks like another dump is on the way in the next Week or so !!!!

Looks more like the cold snap will affect Egypt not Algeria, and not with snow but rain showers - possibly some soft hail in any T-storms or snow in the Sinai mountains. Lebanon, Syria, Israel and Palestine may get a dusting or a heavier spell of snow on Wednesday night/Thursday, but interestingly alongside the tentative upturn in our fortunes going forward, the models have significantly downgraded this event in the past few days. Yesterday's 12z had 850s dropping to -10C over Baghdad for late next week, as well as a stronger system in the Med with a better wrap around of cold air.

The setup still looks potent for northern and central Turkey including Istanbul though, and maybe the Aegean for a short while on Wednesday. The cold air also looks to still reach down into the Gulf area too giving some cold days for Iraq/Saudi/Bahrain etc... I imagine somewhere in Iran will get some snow as well - usually Ardabil or the Caspian coast.

Won't be welcome news for the thousands of refugees in the region, especially as the cold air lingers for a while in spite of the snow thread lessening in western areas.

Lovely pictures of deep snow in SE Italy, if only we can get it in here too.  Look like Nicosia would see single mid to high digits temps and lot of snow in the mountains.   My brother is currently in Amman, Jordan and he travelling back to UK on Thursday next week and he not happy with the wrong timing of snow as it would be a problem to travel out.  He wanted to see the snow in a right timing.

Very interesting to watch it unfold while here continue to be boring at the moment.

Why it cannot be over us which would had been -20C in South UK and -25C from central to northward and -15C over Spain.

Sods law eh Jiries!

I hadn't realised but west-central Turkey was hit by a snowstorm over New Year - over 40cm fell in Kutahya and 38cm in Eskisehir which are both fairly large cities. The next storm moves in tonight and could dump 10-15cm on the same areas, with the larger cities of Ankara and Konya also receiving snowfalls.

Then from tomorrow the cold air moving in will spark snow showers off for northern areas such as Istanbul, Bolu and Bursa later in the day.

Athens and some of the Greek islands could well get a temporary dusting on Wednesday from snow showers, then there'll probably be snow for Jordan/Israel/Pal/Syria/Leb etc. overnight into Wednesday

Skyros in the north Aegean appears to be in the path of a lot of showers today - not a great webcam but clearly evidence of snow falling to sea level and some nice skies:

Damascus now reporting snow with lots of thunderstorms and rain on the other side of the mountains in Beirut. In the Lebanese mountains the snow is piling up at Mzar Faraya - handy comparison shot from a couple of days ago below live pic.

The snowline appears to be falling more quickly than I was expecting in the Levant so there could be significant snow overnight.

My brother who are in Amman now are forced to book a hotel tonight near to the airport due to snow in Amman and would be difficult to get to the airport.  It a very bad timing for him as he wanted to see his first Jordanian snow as he never experience it yet after he married to his Jordanian wife.  It a pity it didn't come last week while on vacation.  Will find out if his flight back to UK would be on schedule tomorrow morning depending if snow reach and settled at the airport area.

Larnaca ensembles show uppers as low as -9C! that we haven't logged on those uppers yet in here which is really ashamed about it.  Max of 7C tomorrow in Nicosia but lowest recorded Max was 2C in 1950 with 1ft of snow that time and a slight below -10C uppers as I look back on the WZ archives that hover the island for 2 days.  My lowest max I saw was 5C during my time of living there.  Mind you 5C is absolutely freezing for that place since our house wasn't built for those temps so heating was on 24 hours a day that time which give a modest max of 16-18C inside and down to 9C in my bedroom when I got up one morning and see my breath mist came out before the heating came on when outside was -2C.  My mother told me in other big house we used to live had dropped to 5C in the living room when -3C was recorded outside.
