Horrendous night....hardly any sleep! At 1 am we had a vicious squall with hail and lightning and another about 3am. Peak gust was 90mph at Blackford Hill, 1 mile from here. When Hurricane Bawbag went through a few years ago, Blackford Hill recorded 100mph.

Pretty nasty night for me. The winds rose just as I went to be, and it kept me up for part of it.


The creaks from the rooflines are normal for most windy days, but (thanks to a timber framed house) some of the bigger gusts could be felt through the bed. We also has a heavy shower that thanks to the wind blowing the rain at the front of the house sounded like someone shotblasting the window.


This morning a couple of roads were absolutely convered in wood chippings presumably due to branches coming down and being run over. Also to the chopped up remains of a tree that must have been down overnight.


It's food waste collection today - I put a couple of bricks on the bin to stop it blowing away, but no doubt the council will not put them back and I'll have to go searching for it when I get in tonight.

We got off very lightly here in NE Fife. Wind speeds were well down on Bawbag/Jan 3 2012 and it was just a regular winter storm here with gust to around 60mph.

I think it was because it was overnight when traffic is light and most people are in bed.
I was lucky I'm on holiday today. A tree came down where I normally park my car, but I've parked it elsewhere as I'm away. Also a bit of faffing around this morning due to trains being cancelled, but now happily trundling south as if nothing happened. Another thing about last night was the rain, we received another inch, so there is a lot of flooding around too. It will be a difficult time for those without power as the storms over the coming days will make repairs difficult

I guess its a relection of the percentage population distruption likely- it was stated that was the only reason the Scottish central belt was upgraded to Amber alert. Disappointing the 'Ched Evans' debacle was felt more important on BBC news than the hurricane force winds in Scotland.

That good friend of Lee Majors, Lee Rotors, should be evidence later today and overnight, given we have a nice warm sector with strong winds coming over the Pennines, causing the Lee Rotor effect. Some strong sustained winds possible for Yorkshire and NE England later, along with all the squally stuff INVOF the cold front coming down overnight as well. MetO have a warning out for this, highlighting the risk to transport using the A1/M1.

probably my niaivety but im very surprised that the pressure even over central scorland was barely beneath 1000mb despite winds gusting to 60+ mph. Would have thought it would have been deep low pressure even away from the centre of the low.

Some strong gusts coming through now as the warm sector is well and truly with us - now 14c at 19.00. Some damage is likely from this in the next few hours I suspect from past experience of these Pennine lee rotors - although some areas get comparably light winds, others get much stronger gusts.
