There was snow on the morning of 22nd January 1984 in Kent, I have my old weather diaries from then.  That was the only occasion that month we saw laying snow.  The newspaper reports show that wintry conditions far exceed anything seen so far this month, and also included 100mph winds.

Really not sure what to make of tomorrow's potential. Very suprised to see warnings to my South West and North West but nothing for my general part of England.

Probably a repeat of Saturday night for me where I saw a few hail, sleet and snow showers but no lasting (more than 5 mins!)cover.

Looks like this cold zonal could work for my region tomorrow night. Will update on Wednesday but giving the current warnings from the MO anywhere over 100 m/ASL could see some wintery weather

Speaking from a IMBY perspective, I'm finding it hard to get excited over this possible snow potential for tomorrow - not because it's unlikely to occur over Kent but I still have the stormy weather on Wednesday night to the back of my mind.
Once we get into the end this week and it's all done and dusted, then perhaps I might get into the spirit of it all with a fresh mind - unless the Atlantic decide to throw up another deepening low pressure system our way as we go into the latter half of January.

The first week of March 1995 was cold zonal. People across Midlands, Wales will remember the low that brought snowfalls on the evening of the 2nd.

I saw lying snow under Met office rules, twice and sleet/snow fell on the first 7 days of that month.

I've posted this here, rather than the media thread, as it deserves to be archived for posterity. It's the most wintry forecast I've seen from the Met Office down here for a zonal westerly flow!

Regional forecast for London & South East England

Rain clearing, then sunshine and showers. Wintry showers overnight.

Today:
Rain, locally heavy, will clear from southeastern areas this morning. Sunshine and scattered showers will follow, the showers heavy at times, with possibly hail and thunder, and later sleet. Temperatures will fall through the day. Feeling cold in the breeze. Maximum Temperature 11C.

Tonight:
Despite the breezy conditions a slight frost will develop, leading to patchy ice on untreated surfaces. Also, scattered hail, sleet or snow showers will occur, giving generally slight accumulations. Minimum Temperature 0C.

Wednesday:
Early wintry showers will soon clear, then dry and sunny before cloud increases in the afternoon. Through the evening very wet and very windy weather will arrive. Becoming milder later. Maximum Temperature 10C.

Outlook for Thursday to Saturday:
Rain clearing to wintry showers through Thursday, these lasting into Saturday, leading to icy stretches on untreated surfaces each night. Very windy Thursday, but lighter winds Friday and Saturday.

Similar here, possibly even more so. Incredibly rare as you say:

Today:
Early cloud clearing, then becoming colder with sunshine and blustery showers with hail and local thunder. The showers will become increasingly wintry and more frequent through the day and, by evening, the snow will fall to increasingly low levels. Maximum Temperature 8C.

Tonight:
Hail, sleet and snow showers, with the risk of lightning, will push in from the west with icy stretches and snow accumulations to low levels possible away from windward coasts. Minimum Temperature -1C.

Wednesday:
Bright start with wintry showers easing. However, the brightness will soon be displaced by increasing amounts of cloud as heavy rain and gales or severe gales develops by late afternoon. Maximum Temperature 10C.

Outlook for Thursday to Saturday:
Sunshine and blustery wintry showers Thursday, with hail and thunder and winds easing. Similar on Friday and Saturday with sunshine and wintry, locally thundery, showers. Widespread frosts developing by night.

Already there are reports of snow in some relatively low lying areas of south west Wales such as Cross hands which is about 150m (also places as low as (60m asl!). Hopefully, we just might see some falling snow here.
