... and the possible snow event along the Channel for Wednesday is according to MetO fizzling out into cold rain. Might be a flake or two on top of the Downs, I suppose.

Well as the cold/cool snap/spell begins to fizzle out this week one can start to reflect at just how overhyped in some quarters this was, between the precipitation and temps being over egged this has to be as disappointing a cold/cool snap/spell for a number of years. I think what makes it more galling from an IMBY perspective is that I still haven't seen snowcover lasting more than an hour since December 2010.

We had the first proper snow in almost 2 years last night. Must have been 3-4cm. Unfortunately most of it melted because this is such a lame cold spell that the temperature was stuck on 1-2C for most of the night, taking until after 5am to drop below zero

Looked a sorry sight this morning with grass poking through the top of it. Recorded it as 1cm though there probably wasn't even that much and that's the deepest snowfall for 22 months

This really is an extremely inadequate cold spell for January. Wouldn't be impressed by this in April.

Never thought I'd hear myself saying this in January, but roll on summer. I'm sick of this sleety, half-arsed sort-of-chilly snap.

The crowning turd in the waterpipe is the much-anticipated slider low, which is forecast by all models and BBC/MetO to deliver nothing but rain (perhaps some sleet) to lowland NW England.

Of course, one hopes that they're wrong and we'll get some snow (I wouldn't have put money on us getting 5cm of snow Boxing Night), but the numbers just don't seem to add up for snow.

What really pees me off is not being able to make a comment on how not cold at all it is in any one area without someone jumping in with an example of where it is cold as if it makes your local observation somehow wrong. Who gives a toss? Lets be honest, if you were the only place to receive snow where everywhere got rain, would you care? Not even remotely.

Almost as annoying as people suggesting there is no cold spell at all because it is not cold where they are - when in reality it might possibly give the lowest temperature recorded in the UK since 2012.

Those in the north with some elevation may see it differently but, as far as the bulk of lowland UK is concerned, this cold spell has had the word FAIL written all over it in big letters since it first appeared as a twinkle in the ENS.

The synoptics modelled were always just too weak and flabby, with no source of real cold air within striking distance, just as there hasn't been for the whole of this winter so far.

The only positive thing about this spell is that it has delivered some short spells of bright sunshine in cloudless skies, which draws my thoughts now inevitably to spring, as I'm now mentally exhausted by endlessly thwarted hope of some decent wintry weather.

Drove to Yorkshire and back today. It's generally a green picture but there is snow on the Derbyshire Dales and a little on the Yorkshire Wolds. This afternoon there were showers on the Yorkshire Wolds but falling mostly as rain or sleet. Temperatures on route were barely below 0C this morning and ranging from 0C to +4C this afternoon.

I think what you are saying is even if we have a 10 day cold spell in Feb and nationwide snow it will be a crap winter.

{edit}  Scratch that.  It's snowing properly now.  Daniel keeps saying, 'Don't worry mum.'  But he's got to drive our car back home from Gatwick on Wednesday morning and that's even more worrying.

I guess some people ramp up the cold as that's what people want to read and it makes them popular.

A detailed post about there will be patchy rain and drizzle for most of the population with a bit of hill snow, would not get half the attention

And if you like mild weather it's not worth even posting about it, as you will be ignored or told you are wrong as the GEFS are showing an easterly in 300 hours, and it is bbq weather up in the stratosphere, what will lead to it being as cold and snowy as Antarctica.

After the fantastic Months of January to March 2013 here with a load of snow it has been rubbish since then with no full snow cover of at least 5cm lying on the ground for a minimum 24 hours, for a relatively low lying area like this that usually does surprisingly well in most scenarios it has been disappointing. What does it take to get proper drifting snow like we used to get in the 70's and 80's? me and the neighbours further up the lane used to have to dig the lane out and it took a few days. Such a distant memory now.

I seem to have been too low down, too north, south, east & west this Winter  and that looks to be carrying on into tomorrow night with the front possibly stalling around the Warrington area going off the 12z Euro4 model. I suppose I can say it hasn't been snowless though thank fully and I've seen some cover. Would have been a disaster otherwise!

This isn't really a moan, more an observation. Its mid-morning, approximately 12 hours before a forecast 'potential' snow event which may deliver a good covering of snow to a lucky portion of the UK. I am amazed that the forum is so quiet. Yes, the end of this cold spell is in sight but it perhaps goes to show that we're more interested in the chase rather than the event itself. Are like-minded weather enthusiasts really that depressed? Its only mid January and there's some rather interesting charts in FI which would have this place boiling in October.

I am perplexed.
