The fact is that this December will be mild in General - however every year we always (exception of December 2010) when It remained cold and snowy from 28th November until 26th December). -We have always had a colder spell- it's either in the run up to Christmas with high pressure causing fog and frost or it would usually turn colder from Boxing day.

No, it is not ironic at all. It is a statement that follows on directly from the first part of the outlook, where it states than in the preceding period to the one you quote that things are expected to "quieten down a bit"

There are several weather warnings currently on the MO website for rain, wind and in much of Scotland, snow.

Surprised this hasn't already been posted in here, especially given the slightly more positive sound of the latter part of the forecast.

Met Office Update http://www.metoffice.gov.uk/public/weather/forecast

UK Outlook for Monday 7 Dec 2015 to Wednesday 16 Dec 2015

Largely unsettled, with areas of low pressure moving in from the Atlantic, bringing showers or longer spells of rain across most areas. Some heavy bursts of rain are likely in places, especially in the north where there will also be some sleet or snow at times. Strong winds are likely as areas of low pressure pass through, with a risk of severe gales in particularly exposed northern areas. Between these weather systems some drier, brighter periods with lighter winds will develop as well, the best of these in the south. Temperatures will vary from day to day with milder conditions generally accompanying the wet and windy weather, although a brief cooler spell is likely for the first few days. Overnight frosts are likely in the settled and clear weather.

UK Outlook for Friday 18 Dec 2015 to Friday 1 Jan 2016:
The latest indications are that unsettled, wet and windy weather will continue at first across mid December although some transient settled periods will give some drier interludes at times. Showers or longer spells of rain will affect most parts at times as Atlantic weather systems move across from the west, giving perhaps wetter than average conditions in the west. Later in the month there may be more in the way of drier and perhaps colder weather, although there still remains some uncertainty. A large variation in temperatures, mild conditions at times associated with frontal systems with colder interludes between.

Where is the N. American weather reports? Anyone?>

Anyway, I can't find this but wanted to bring this to your attention - Brett Anderson's monthly update shows the extent of the warmer than average temperatures especially over Canada and even towards the eastern seaboard:

There is now a red weather warning out for the rainfall in parts of Cumbria and I fear there could be quite a bit of flooding in places
