To be fair, she said "there is just a hint of westerly winds returning by the end of the week".

Yes, I found that forecast very surprising.  There's nothing much in the output to indicate a return of westerlies by the end of next week.

But there again the obvious immediate focus has to be on the large rainfall totals in prospect over the next 3-4 days.

Edit: did anyone notice that she referred to high pressure "to the north and east" and pointed to Scandinavia?  What's that all about?

A very underwhelming forecast from helen willets it must be said no mention of cold certainly seems a downgrading of potential cold is looking likely alas.

Matt Taylor will do...12.25pm forecast....next week winter arrives good and proper at long last! Quite a contrast to forecasts an hour or so ago!

Direct quotes:

"As that happens we get into the true cold air as well... so a hint of cold weather anyway for the next 3 or 4 days with an ongoing risk of frost and ice, but we could see even colder weather potentially next week."

"A blast of Arctic air - what it should feel like really during the middle of the winter"

"However there is a question mark for later in the week - just a question mark at this stage - that there could be some windier weather and therefore wetter weather coming back in".

And this is how she summed it up:

Seems pretty fair to me based on most output - colder, drier, with the risk of wintry showers just about anywhere, and uncertain longevity.

All those over-analysing, questioning and in some cases criticising the ukmo extended forecast text output this last week - perhaps a lesson has been learnt this morning? 🤓

Apparently the long-range forecast should be updated six times a day to reflect the whims of each GFS and ECM run :)

1pm update: "The entire UK will shortly resemble Elsa's ice palace from Frozen, and Halfords will sell out of snow shovels"

6pm update: "Wet and windy for all with the chance of snow above 500 metres in Scotland, and Superdrug will sell out of razor blades"

:)

Ironically my bbc forecast for next week is as cold as it's ever been certainly cold enough for snow. Confusing times.

Cold and dry next week according to Carol just now on the Beeb seemed confident. Wintryness around coast but that could change. Wintryness inland?

W COUNTRY UPDATE So, strong evidence continues for cold weather into mid nxt week. Longevity unsure but current thoughts are for (1/3 contd)

W COUNTRY CONT'D 2/3 ..conditions to stay cold into the nxt weekend & poss early the following week. Weak signal for earlier cessation contd

W COUNTRY CONT'D 3/3 Airmass won't be intrinsically that cold: combined w other issues, this means awkward f'cast mix of varying snow levels

A now used a more diplomatic (ie. open ended) weather systems will try to cross the country.

Now more ambiguous due to the current flux in the models.

Just been looking at the week ahead on the BBC for this neck of the woods and the cold weather still stretches out as it can which is the the same as yesterday. Unless things have not been update there is no change to the temps either with highs of around 3c
