I am soaked and I'm inside - it just smashed through everything. Just trying to calm the dogs.

Not all supercells have extreme rain rates Q for example

Low Precipitation (LP) Supercells

LP supercells usually form in dry regions, where there might be just enough moisture to form the storm, but not enough moisture to rain very hard. You can usually find the updraft on the rear flank (back) of the storm, and the meso will be more defined and obvious. On radar, an LP will not show up as a hook echo because there's not enough precipitation within the storm to provide the reflectivity. These storms might not look that strong, but they can pack a punch. LP supercells often produce tornadoes and large hail.

Radars are completely useless in this sort of situation; they are just saturating. All we know for sure is that the rates are in excess of 250mm/hr (NW radar), I can't find a radar that has a more extreme scale.

Amazing storm here in Leigh near Wigan an hour ago. Lightning was like strobe lighting. I had to turn away at one point. A massive flash and huge bang at 10.30 which sounded like my house had split in 2! Feels fresher and breezier now except in my house where the humid air just won't move.

Lightning and distant thunder slowly approaching here in the Scottish Borders. Some flashes to the SE others to the SW

I'm just amazed that I was able to see such an incredible show of distant lightning in that recent storm to the NW, from what looks like at least 50 miles away.  And sometimes could even see clear lightning strokes as well as lots of flickering lightning from high up in the storm cloud. At its most intense period, lightning was seen flashing multiple times per second from several different parts of the cloud.

Easily the best show of distant lightning I've ever seen.  Congrats to all those who were underneath it!

Watched the storms from a hill on the Deryshire/Greater Manchester border then Holme Moss as it headed for the Yorkshire Dales.

What can I say, that was the most severe storm round here in terms of lightning in many many years. Easily up at 60 a minute at its peak. Where we were we an intense burst of rain hail and incredible wind.

Clear now and 22c as Glossop itself stayed virtually dry.

After threatening at several points today the storms finally reached Aberdeen at 2am. Well worth the wait, fantastic lightshow, squally winds and torrential rain. Oh and I have a hole in the bottom of a canvas wardrobe caused by a terrified collie dog. An exact repeat from when he was a puppy and a similar storm occurred.

Great videos! That storm area hit the Borders at 12 midnight for an hour. It could be tracked on lightning maps from Cheshire all the way north to Shetland! Enjoyed the reports but as usual frustrated by 2 storm threads when in full Duane mode!

Hope you are ok Marigold in Yorkshire Dales after your hail damage last night

The storm earlier looked like it had supercell characteristics and this is similar.
I do not have access to base or storm relative velocity data so can't say for sure if it is a supercell but the radar signature looks interesting. Reports of large hail and very gusty winds.

The garden is flattened, the trees have lost leaves and branches, the window is cracked and it looks like someone has bitten a chunk out of the wood! The car seems fine - strongly built German model!

Well the worst storm I have ever witnessed passed through Oakworth, Keighley last night at around 11:30pm!! I have never witnessed neither lightning or hail like it, at it's peak there were easily 70-80 flashes a minute and the largest hail I found were golf ball size. My car has noticeable dents on both the roof and bonnet this morning, trees were stripped of leaves and small branches and our next door neighbours conservatory roof now looks like a piece of Emmental cheese! Below are pics of some hail I found in our back garden, they were probably even larger as I didn't go outside until the storm had passed through and the temperature was still 21c even after the storm.

Best chance looks to be homegrowns today, as that convective mess in the Channel is losing all electrical activity as it pushes north, although it could re-invigorate once over land again.

Upper winds from the south and a surface drift from the NNW this morning, moving in to the complex currently heading for the Sussex coast.

I am intrigued by the cells that lie behind this area across NW France - discrete cells that could well have rotation judging by the radar signature.
