Indeed - I refer to those quite frequently Andy. A very useful repository. Interestingly some of the figures I quote above (which are from the Met Office official Daily Weather Summary bulletin) are lower than those quoted in your summaries which suggests either that after quality control some of the figures were rejected or the official daily bulletin was prepared before the figures posted on the Met Office website. The latter seems unlikely given the data you quote are published on the Met Office website around midnight each day and only run from 09z to 21z and not the full 24 hours.

Thats interesting.   I use the MetO daily summary as published on the website each day.   However it is possible these are subsequently upated?   That makes sense especially when new highest temps come in from stations that only submit data weekly or monthly.   Doesnt explain why, for example, they should change the max for July 2nd 2013 from 18.6c at Norwich AP to 18.5c at Weybourne though.

Must admit I do not refer to the MetOs archives to see if they change.

Currently 9.2C - pretty exceptional for down here, as single-digit temperatures from early July to late August are rare as hen's teeth.

I've just recorded my coolest July minimum in 9 years with a minimum of 9.0c.


Down here we just about dip into single figures between Mid July-Mid August once every 2 or 3 years. This temperature is exceptionally low for this locale.

I'm suprised at people's suprise at these temperatures - I get single digit minima here in Worcestershire almost every July.  It's very unusual not too.   And even 2003 saw it down below 10c at the beginning of August (though admittedly daytime max at the time were somewhat higher!)

I'm suprised at people's suprise at these temperatures - I get single digit minima here in Worcestershire almost every July.  It's very unusual not too.   And even 2003 saw it down below 10c at the beginning of August (though admittedly daytime max at the time were somewhat higher!)

I didn't realise it was normally that warm down there.   I guess it's proximity to the sea?

Ave July min here is just 12.2c.   So 9c is no more exceptional than 15.5c

just goes to show how much variation there is around this little island and how we shouldn't assume what is normal for one is normal for another

The sea does play a huge factor, but also the urbanisation of the region. These warm nights are quite widespread on the southen coast from Sussex down to Cornwall, and across the southeast interior most urban towns located near London are warm.

I agree with Andy. No reason for those in the south to be complaining. It has been a perfectly decent year so far. Nowhere near as warm as last year but that was a record breaking year so we have to put things in perspective.


Despite last Friday being horrible and by far the wettest day of the year I am still below average in terms of rainfall this month. Indeed so far this year every single month has been below average for rainfall.


Temperature wise July will come in fractionally below average as did February. May was fractionally above average and every other month has been more significantly above average. I have managed one day over 32C although days over 25C generally have been in short supply this summer. But overall nothing to complain about really.

May was above average here, but otherwise every month this year - including July (unless we get about 10mm in the next 2 days) - has been drier than normal.   Hardly a cause for complaint!   And no month has been cold either.   Though obviously some days have (rather fewer in the winter!).

Not that unusual for July. Same thing happened on 10-12 July 2012.

I'm complaining about the cold already the evening, and how crap it's been this past week.

This year had been poor for warmth with only one day hitting 29C, and hand full at or over 26C...

As for rainfall I'm surprised that you have had below average all year in Basingstoke when considering here Portsmouth only March & April ended below.

January was a wash out, February was average, May above, June average, July now a little above.

I've just noticed that the VP2 located near me in Seabrook recorded a minimum temperature of 7.8c at 06.05hrs yesterday morning. That is extremely chilly for this time of year locally.
