Just hope there aren't that many Met Office forecasters working for the BBC but I know what it is like to have been laid off from what I thought was the most secure job there is.

Could it be that the quality of the broadcasts is determined by the broadcaster, not necessarily the data provider?

I think the story is simply that it is being put out to tender and therefore the MetO are not guaranteed the contract, as they, presumably, have until now.   And there may be pressure on the BBC to accept a cheaper "better value" proposal.

Had a little more time to look into this and as I now understand it the MetO have been knocked out of the tendering process at the initial stage and definitely won't be shortlisted. The only way their services could be retained is if none of the short listed companies put in an acceptable bid at the final stage and the process has to be restarted.

Yes but rightly or wrongly the general public has faith in the BBC  forecasts supplied by the Met Office. The BBC forecasts supplied by  Metcheck does not have the same ring to it.
