Sometimes - and probably lately due to an age thing - but I do ask myself on why I get all eager and excited about the prospect of cold and snow when all it does is make for more expensive heating costs and disruptions before turning to a messy slush within hours what with me living in a built up area. I guess I just like seeing it come down from the sky and settling as a fresh virgin cover completely changing the landscape temporarily before it all gets mashed up. Taking into account that the last time I got to see an actual snow cover was March 2013, so it would make a change from the usual frequent gale and rain. Speaking of which, it would be so nice if I can actually go for more than two days without experiencing that "in your face" southerly gale - and that's in the summer!
Thinking about it, I miss the old days when anything beyond 48 hours was considered to be FI. Now we're spoilt by being able to easily access charts and outputs for two weeks (and even beyond). Over-information can be just as tiring as lack of it, especially when dealing with it on an amateur level.
Perhaps I should pursue a less stressful hobby, like drawing . . . Oh, wait . . .  Still, it is being a fine start to the day this morning with the sun coming out. It is decent enough whenever that does happen in the winter, I just try not to miss it by blinking too much.

Also, my 9 year old daughter is soooooo  keen on some snow.  Where I live it was probably March 13 since we saw snow as well, and model watching can be a very time consuming and painful past-time.

I know snow is unpleasant and impractical but I still love it and I always will, at least until hip replacements become a factor. I've been skiing just about every year since I was 13 (that's 25 years now, gulp!) and I still can't get enough of the white stuff!

Well, that was a rather horrendous night. Not flooded thankfully, but a few in the village have succumbed. The surreal part was seeing a service bus more or less floating a field close to the ythan river. If the rain had persisted into lunchtime today I reckon it would have been twitchy arse time for many more, including me.

I'm looking forward to the arrival of summer.. well, that is, until the GFS starts showing a prolonged northerly for the start of June. Summer 2016 is over.

What the fudge does everyone see in the GFS model?

There's people clinging to its every chart in the MO thread like it's a certainty it'll verify!

It's a sea of pessimism due to previous let-downs in winter I guess.

I know it's not showing what many want to see, including me, but if I had the means to generate my own weather model based on my own interpretations of weather patterns/pressure/teleconnections blah blah, my own model would flip-flop and vary as much as the GFS is at the moment - it's that shite!

Yet a few dodgy outputs and sure enough we've got the 'winter is over' doom-mongers out in force, who seem to completely ignore ECM/JMA/GEM and UKMO outputs

I am fascinated by the psychology of the model thread more than the charts it displays!

I think we generally suffer from over supply of information.

It's the model thread so everyone has the right to discuss any chart be it t+12 or t+360. Most charts posted seem to be t+144 or further afield and I think most posters genuinely post them Just For Fun!

BUT, when you read a few pages of the thead say on a good model, view all the FI charts and associated comments, it creates like a virtual mob frenzy, you get excited, you truly believe that it's really going to happen even though it's in the realms of FI.

And then the disappointment kicks in...

Ceefax happy memories....for me it was also listening to the Radio 4 forecasts at 5 to 1 and 5 to 6 for the last bit of the forecast when mentioned the outlook for the next 2 days....of course surprise snowfalls are still possible but I do sometimes miss that amazing experience of waking up in the dark and that strange light glow outside and peering out and seeing the gardens transformed...having no idea the night before what was likely to happen....

Clip from The Shining, love it!

Remember going to see the Shining on 21st February 1981 and anyone who as seen it will know it's the huge snowfall covering the hotel that makes the film so erie. When I left the cinema in Birmingham after watching the film I was greeted by a landscape straight out the film as the City was being swept by a huge snowstorm!

I will never forget walking home (the buses had stopped because of the snow) through silent streets blinded by the drifting, swirling snow waiting for Jack Nicholson to jump out of a snow covered bush wielding his axe!

It was a great snowfall and 25cms lay by the following morning.

Can't see anything coming from this - just a few wintery bits and pieces in coastal areas
Temps are only forecast about 4 to 6 c generally - how can we call this a cold spell - only average temps or slightly below the Jan average

The fact is if you want to see a real a wintery spell you need countrywide temperatures of 0 C or just above freezing - preferably the odd ice day as well

Only this will allow snow to fall and accumulate

I just cannot see a setup at the moment allowing this to happen

Absolutely unreal. Following the foulest week of filth ever recorded it's yet another grim depressing grey sunless Saturday making 6 out of 6 from this season which has completely and utterly redefined the term "write-off".

Totally revolting, soul destroying, hideous and without doubt the most horrible and nasty run of repellant weather I have ever endured. These conditions are just not liveable. Barely seen any sun for over four months apart from when I was in Lanzarote

The UK weather may be bad but there has been some atrocious weather in the Alps too in the last 48 hours. Freezing levels have gone up and the rain has been falling. Here's a live feed from Courchevel 1650:
