Not on the same scale as up north, but this was the result of only some 5 or 6 hours' rain today. And yes, that is a marker behind my young relatives showing 3 feet depth of water in the ford.

Great pics Dave.

Living not far from there, I've become very accustomed to the Brock floods over the last 4 or 5 decades although some in the 90s were particularly impressive. The Lymington River and its tributaries around these parts are notorious for flash flooding and I have seen deep water turn to nothing on the roads and vice-versa in 24hours. Something about the soil and gravel and the bizarre tributary arrangement (stream bifurcation ratio and all that) and many of the streams in the Forest ( I recall this from my mapmaking days) are listed as 'ephemeral' and don't even feature on the map despite delivering a big input when it rains.

Good images to show what can happen in a short while. It Is a wonder the Somerset Levels are not in flood....

Others just get wet.

I know it well from family connections from my childhood and up to now. A long time it seems. The ice on the approaches can be interesting too when it freezes although the water is piped under the road when possible as I am sure you know.

However, the recent rains have helped the chalk aquifers in Dorset which were quite low until recently. But the floods near us on the West Stafford bypass and a major problem for commuters to Dorchester are more of a poor engineering nature than heavy rain as as little as 10mm rainfall can cause this http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-dorset-35321336. Julian Fellowes can't be too happy as the diversion goes past his house.
