We do now have sleet on the Wirral - it's a miracle, winter has arrived!!!

I fear here in Leeds we will be too Far East for any action. Only a shift of a few miles would change that though so a case of radar and window watching I would say. Not holding my breath though!!!

Just driven back from Snowdon. I think PPN intensity will be the main driver for marginal areas as has been mentioned. It was drizzling up at 400m on the Denbigh Moors (although there was thick snow on the ground) and plain raining in the Vale of Clywd. But then it started sleeting around Mold as the rain got heavier, with some big flakes at one point. Then further periods of sleet coming up the Wirral. All very linked to PPN intensity.

Keeping everything crossed, but this might go in our favour today

Edit: Patrick, I don't think it's PPN intensity that's the key, rather how far one is into the colder air to the east. I'd say anywhere east of here (and some way west) will see any PPN fall as snow.

Not quite cold enough away from the core of England I think...and to the S and W of the feature milder air is mixed in.  south and west of a line Stoke to Hastings rain looks much more probable.

Then again, looking at the radar, the PPN band seems to be moving more SE'wards than the SSE'wards it was previously showing. That's bad news for me for two reasons: 1. the period of PPN will be shorter; 2. more chance of milder air reaching further eastwards. On the other hand, it increases the chances of those further east seeing snow.

Going by the forecasts and graphics, experience says expect the unexpected when it comes to snow. Can imagine some may be disappointed tomorrow morning, while others may be pleasantly surprised.

Yes the band has been progressing further east and earlier than modelled by most models.

I have locked the other snow thread (for the moment) as this one seems to have taken over for the event currently affecting a legend swathe of SW and southern Scotland and now into parts of NW, W Englnd and Wales.

A slight difference east real v model, and yet the high res 0.1deg Aperge drops the snow line further west tonight.
Great stuff and typical of our marginal uk set-up.
If only we could get synoptics that are definitively snow for all - maybe February will deliver?

I might be looking at this wrong but it just seems to moving further and further east. It looks like it might miss West Midlands completely or just fall as rain. We shall see what falls from the sky though when i'm heading back north at 5pm

These marginal affairs always seem to skirt with the W.Mids and favor just to the east of us.

I'm based in Worcester these days for work and the poor b*ggers get nothing wintry here.

I'll be disappointed if we don't get 3cm to 6cm from this.

Feeling quietly confident for here given the eastward shift. I think the Peak District could do really well. We're east Sheffield here so might miss the best of it, but my work and also Dronfield might get snow.
Fascinating spell of radar/lamppost watching!

From December 27th 2020, zonality will be banned from mixing with the UK. We appreciate that this may come as a shock to younger people and old Uncle Barty. This ban will last for a minimum of ten days.
