Temps IMBY have been rising steadily for the last 36+ hours. Not flying up, just slowly increasing. We had a high of 0.6c on Saturday, and it was actually quite steady around the 0.1c - 0.6c mark until the early hours of Sunday morning, when it began to inch up.

When I left this morning, it was at 2.7c.

IU suspect that will fall before we hit the milder weather at the end of thwe week, as it seems we will get one last cough of cold air from the HP building to our north.  But is suspect this will be more like night time cold, rather than a day time low.

GFS continues to steer towards interesting charts into FI. With Pressure again building to the north arriving at the same time as a northly plunge down the eastern side of it.

Well colder air digging back in here now with the temp back down to 3 and dropping as the skies are clearing. DP now sub zero as well, will be a very cold one here tonight in the Medway valley.

(Note I am not forecasting extreme cold in South Devon )

The SE'ly waft from mainland Europe has brought some decidedly continental air with it.

Despite hazy cirrus and other high clouds, it's -0.3C and falling slowly, with a dewpoint of -4.3C. The roads on the way home had that dry, salty look to them - the first time I've seen that in a long while!

I am suspicious of GFS's prediction of a -1*C minimum here tonight. There seems to be a lot of high cloud, to which the model often seems to attribute a greater 'blanket effect' than we actually see.

The handling of atmospheric moisture levels near to the ground may also be an issue based on a vague recollection of something I read while studying in Reading two years back.

Looking at some of the high-res models, ARPEGE offers -2 to -3*C in my vicinity, and HIRLAM is a degree colder.

However, ARPEGE then offers up -6 to -7*C for tomorrow night, which does seem a bit dramatic.

Last time I checked it was -1.5c here and falling away steadily - looks odds on to be the coldest night of the winter, be interesting to see just how low it gets.

Well for the first time since February last year the air has a winter cold feel to it down here.

It has that 'smell' to it. 😏

It's going to be proper frosty night I think.. -2C maybe even -3C before the night is over.

At 6.30pm it was already frosty and below zero here, no idea what it is now, would need to check. It feels very cold, however, I think it will feel Baltic in the morning when I go to work.......great stuff😃

Have you been to the Baltic Deep Powder...? I spent 2 yrs in Helsinki a few years back, Jan daytime temps were down to -17degC, even with 3 layers of clothes on I only lasted 90mins outside, was awesome though...I remember 2ft of snow falling overnight too, and guess what...the trains and buses were still on time the next morning...was frosty here an hour ago but seems to be melting as we now have cloud cover...

Not quite 2010 as yet but this is turning out to be a proper spell of winter. Congrats to those who did correctly say there could be a decent chance of a cold spell in Jan. Now we are in Jan we still have 4 - 6 good weeks of winter potential left with eyes in all directions esp to the north and east. Could have an ice day maybe tomorrow.?

Rivers were frozen solid, snow was deep everywhere, yet all trains etc. ran on time, just as you mention. It was great 😀.

I used Baltic in a slang term, as in freezing cold. It's all relative, however, as tomorrow morning it will feel 'baltic' for my part of the SE, but as you point out, it would not be 'baltic' by Baltic standards......❄️

-3.2C at the moment, with an overnight low so far of -5.3C. I must admit I wasn't expecting it to get that cold... -5C is rare here without snow cover!
