Very dry air in the blue area; as the showers push into this zone during the evening I think its highly likely they will turn to snow.

Moderate sleet as I climbed up the motorway home. Had a burst of 'snowy' sleet at 180 masl where there was some proper chunky flakes mixed in. Home now and it's eased off but is only 2.9C and sleeting still.

Even on the south coast it is chilly. Driving home after the football in Southampton and there was quite a lot of sleet mixed in with the rain in the heavier showery bursts.

The WRF which personally I rate higher than EURO4

Really could be quite exciting for some; dramatic showers of heavy rain, hail, sleet, snow with thunder at times!

Heard a few reports of lying snow this morning in parts of western Ireland but nothing here locally except lethal black ice conditions during the morning. Plenty of showers around me all day but somehow, they managed to dodge me completely. Plenty of nice CBs dotted within my horizon still.

We have wet snow falling here on Saddleworth at 200m. I can see it turning white above about 300-350metres! Definitely glad I moved to the hills.

Hills above 350m turning white. Snow looking to be falling lower than this around the bottom of the Snake.

Sky is turning more and more to a snowy colour.

Snow line is dropping more and more. As I look up you can see all the snow flakes high up in the sky. No wind at all now.

Just had a spell of heavy wet snow that left a slushy covering on cars etc, widespread reports of snow across Cumbria and Lancashire from a band of precipitation moving north east.

Flakes were huge and I was amazed when I happened to look out of the window.

Snow fell at a temperature of 3c which is unusually high, must be the dry air mentioned earlier and I suspect a steep lapse rate.

So first snow was on November 16th and last on April 9th, not bad, shame it did so little in between!!!

With the sun gone down, and the boundary layer cooled I have two additional official snow reports to add. Given all the unofficial reports of snow in the NW I'm suprised I had to wait this long.

official snow reports in:

Sennybridge (Wales), 307m

Spadedam (NW england), 285m

Tulloch Bridge (W Scotland), 237m

Warcop (NW England), 227m

Aberporth (Wales), 133m

Gurteen (Ireland), 75m

Kerry airport (Ireland), 34m

Shannon Airport (Ireland), 6m

They are somewhat less impressive being both above 200m though.

Anyway I think this is going to be the most we are going to get. 8 official metoffice sites recorded snow today, 4 of them were below 200m. Shannon at essentially sea level is the most impressive; but like the other Ireland reports all happened before sunrise.

I'm currently in Falmouth, Cornwall & at 11:50 yesterday we had rain that turned to sleet then snow for about 2 mins back to rain then followed by hail then to blue skies with sun for the rest of the day. Pretty special weather for down here.

4 official snow reports so far today:

Spadedam (NW england), 285m

Warcop (NW England), 227m

Eskdalemuir (NW England), 200m

Kerry airport (Ireland), 34m

Not as impressive as the 8 official reports yesterday but still noteworthy.

The winner in all of this is southern Ireland; Kerry had snow on both days. While snow is not generally unusual in April I suspect it is for a part of the isles that finds snow hard to come by even in midwinter.

Quite a few instances of snow reported from around Ireland.
A friend of mine even reported sea level snow at Bray on the East coast.
No joy for me though in Dublin and no major events.
I think you made the right call for some snowfall all the same, Q.
Well done.

Something interesting is stiring for Friday. This is the ARPEGE:

Plunge of deep cold air; note the 500mb temperatures. So Friday is likely to be another day of heavy showers and convection with hail and thunder.

It is far more marginal than the event on Saturday though, I suspect northern scotland may see the showers turn wintry; but we will have to watch this space to see if it will be cold enough for snow further south. It will be a case of getting the alignment exactly right.

Increasing chance according to the MetO of lowland snow over Southern Scotland and Northern England Friday as a cold front moves south with some very cold air following behind.

With light winds, cold air ahead of the front and even colder air behind it this is one to watch.

North West forecast on the met office website does mention potetial for snow on Friday into Saturday "mainly across hills".

Will be interesting to see what happens. My bet would be that high ground above 300m may see a short spell of settling snow.
