Last night saw our first warm night of the year.. Very summer like.

Overnight low of 16.3C 😏

Most of the night was spent above that making last nights sleep a sticky one.

The ugly face of going to the beach - there was a 7-mile queue all the way from Chichester to the coast at Wittering yesterday, taking about 2 hours on top of wherever else you had come from (at least for those working off satnav and not knowing the back doubles)

Cost £8 for the day but free if you know the footpaths.

The coast at Wittering - the only really sandy beach in West Sussex - was rather nice once you were there

However as we walked past this, there was a bit of angst as those who had pitched shelters lower down the beach without realising that the tide would shortly cover that spot, were now trying to carve out a bit of territory amongst the upper levels shown here.

After an amazing 17.1°C overnight low the 23C we got today was totally unexpected under a lot of cloud with a few bright spells but the air felt thick, heavy; 18C now after a refreshing shower.

We've been really cold the past few nights compared to the rest of England.. currently 11C here while it's 16C in Manchester. Curse of the easterly wind.

Still, after a fabulous Monday with unbroken sunshine and a max of 23C, can't complain. Skies were lovely and blue as well, rather than white/milky/hazy.

I love this city for all sorts of reasons but the weather can be testing!! This time of year is particularly frustrating for me when 90% of the UK has already had a nice warm spell and we haven't. Annual sunshine and rainfall here is comparable to Eastern England (it's actually drier than some London suburbs). Spring and Summer temperatures however are surpressed by the North Sea whenever we have winds between the North and South east. This year my warmest day has been 16 C and my warmest night 10 C. NW Scotland (well away from the poisonous influence of said Sea) has seen 27 C! We also rarely experience summer thunder.
Looking for positives, It's a beautiful looking capital city with clean air, amazing long distant coastal and mountain vistas, big skies and stunning sunrises and sunsets. In 2 hours I can be on the beautiful East Lothian or Northumberland Coast, the Lake District and the Borders and even Highland Perthshire!
Just a wee moan and a gloat!

Had a long drive to Aberdeen today and it was sunshine all the way, temperature reached 22c as I passed Perth and it was 16c in Aberdeen centre despite its proximity to the North Sea.

Even Richard would be pleased!

Yes big rant - how come it has been up to 27c in west Lothian /Skye & Western Isles etc? - Why so warm in Western Scotland? Anyone??!

Here in the SW (Devon) we have had constant rain or drizzle followed by heavy thundery rain since Monday! Looking at the current rainfall radar it looks dry all over the UK except Devon where it's still raining at 13-14c:

Tonight could be our fifth consecutive night with minima above 13°C; that's the first time here in May since 1989. A few days before we had frost on the cars, and the charts suggest we will revert to that at the weekend. A summer sandwich. Fun weather.

At the moment here at this end of Kentland, while it is being sunny with a fresh north east wind, it is so pleasant to have all windows open to air the house without feeling cold and not having the choking stench of half a million badly lit BBQs pouring in.

If the rest of this Summer go along like today, I can live with that.

So yesterday 23c on the south coast with a uv index of 5/6 (dependent on where you look) today some 8-10c cooler and a uv index of 6 or 7 ......just goes to show, that heat is irrelevant

Spring around the world update from my favourite weather places:

Basra above 40C for several weeks now, possibly hitting 48C next week.

Yakutsk still seeing some sub-zero nights and days in the low teens. Last year it was heading into the kid 20s by now.

Still no 20C at Ponta Delgada in the Azores. Could be late May at this rate.

Death Valley hitting 40C for the first time this week.

Alert Nunavut above -10C fir the first time, very early, reflecting the concentration of NH heat on the American side of the Arctic at the moment.
