Impressive heat here with a maximum temperature of 29.3c. No surprise really though with crystal clear skies, lack of breeze, 850Hpa temps approaching 20c and 573dam air present.

Just looking like a one day event here. 27C this afternoon, but looking like being only 23-24C tomorrow, but of course I may be surprised.

Edit - Arpege has the +20 850Hpa temps oozing into Kent 1pm tomorrow (BST): Clearly 34c or 35c is entirely possible somewhere in the SE corner, Norwich could do well.

For a small nation we certainly have vast day to day differences in the weather. Today at 6pm for instance, London was sunny and 30 C, Edinburgh was 16 C with light rain.
No sunshine today up here either, quite gloomy.

Temperatures really ramp up today, with 40C possible somewhere in South West France. Various cities have forecasts of 35C+ every day between now and Sunday, and France will be almost cloudless in that period. It's a shame the shape of the double ridge is keeping most of the heat to the far South East of England the next couple of days, as it's always nicer to have a nationwide event. It also means more cloud even in the SE than would be ideal. We're on the edge of the real heat.

For the pedants out there, Meteo France has a formal definition of "canicule" - which is close to what we'd describe as "dangerous heatwave" - but uses the term "vague de chaleur" which is the literal translation of heatwave more loosely. For example the local news in Saone et Loire describes this week as a "vague de chaleur durable" which won't quite meet the canicule definition because of relatively cool nights below 20C.

Surprising to see Met Office sticking with 31c as the Weds max when 34c seems to me more likely, possibly more.

I'd be surprised to see 34c - just feels a bit late in the year. That said, it was already approaching the mid-twenties by the time I got into Central London this morning at 0845, and there's less of a breeze than yesterday, so you never know. A 32c certainly seems likely.

This has actually turned out to be a fairly decent second half of the summer in this part of the country.

It's set to be the first summer for many years when every month has been warmer than average, and significantly so.

Heatwave wise though not so much. Until this week we only had one short spell that hit 30C somewhere in the country and that's under par. This week probably takes us up to par. There was also that week in early summer where fortunes reversed and we had beautiful weather in the north west and overcast muck in the SE.

Today is the peak for London this week. More cloud to come tomorrow. I'd hazard a guess that we get to 32.5 today, with Gravesend the top spot.

Bit of an outlier, but not much. The usual suspects creeping towards 27C

Fresher today (max forecast at 21c), then sub-70f temps for the foreseeable after that.
