Thanks for the heads-up on the signals for winter 2016-17. I found that very interesting and informative.

This was a really marathon session (nearly 39 mins !) today and only 1 water station stop

I was interested in the 3 main connections you went for (SST distribution, ENSO and Sunspot numbers) and wondered with all the info that's out there whether it is possible to find analogues from past data where all 3 are (roughly) matching the 2016 values

Thanks Gav; I found this to be broad, balanced, concise, coherent and unbiased. Even the great unread like me took a lot from this; one of your most watchable (and informative) updates.

Have added the first winter update to the winter updates page and wrote a written summary (more like a report given how extended this first update is) for anybody that can't watch this vid;

Excellent read for winter 2016-17, Gavin. Thanks for highlighting the peculiar behaviour of the QBO. When something so fundamental does something never before seen in 63 years of measurements, then all the other analogues during this period might turn out to be irrelevant.

2 miles west of Taunton, 32 m asl, where "milder air moving in from the west" becomes SNOWMAGEDDON.
Well, two or three times a decade it does, anyway.

It's certainly going to make for a very "challenging" forecast I think...
