The lack of snow is one thing, but we also have remember that here in Edinburgh, we have also build up quite a large warmer than average temperature anomaly for this month here in Edinburgh as a result of what happened before this latest cold spell started. This current cold spell should bring that anomaly down a bit but that anomaly has already got to a stage now where if we have any more milder periods during this month, then this month can't really be anything other than a milder than average month overall. To me, the fact that the models are predicting milder weather at around Christmas only serves to seal that fate.

This is the Weather online week ahead forecast: - Stays cold throughout the whole of the week.

It's the lack of cold air really!? It's simply not cold enough! I mean i thought we would easily see a -4c to -5 in the major towns and cities and perhaps -8c to -10c in rural parts but most of if not all towns and cities are at or just above freezing! - Hardly cold and the wind will prevent a frost as well. I remember last winter very well (even though it wasn't memorable), whilst we had a rubbish boring winter we still manage to have a cold spell end of November 2016 with freezing fog and odd snow grain and temperature here in Exeter got down to -4.5c around 6am on morning of 30th November 2016.

Ironically that was the coldest time of the winter 16/17. But it was still colder and we did manage a -2.5c sometime during 3rd week of Jan despite the lack of snow and benign borefest of a winter we did get some cold nights with severe frost at times!! We have yet to get to freezing so far. But then again it's early days! Just so disappointed this northerly can't even give us a sub zero night temp with a nice frosty morning to wake up to - thought that would be the least bit appropriate if it isn't going to snow.

I had so much faith in this cold spell to deliver something more, especially with a Greenland HP as well as a negative AO etc.

I mean max of 6c for daytime temp and +1.5c at night in a northerly isn't cold at all. It's a degree or two below average for heavens sake!

The good news is that winter is only one week old and things could change but with February predicted to be milder than average and the PV returning etc I am a bit weary. If we want cold and snow we need it now whilst we have the block over Arctic and Greenland as well as shorter days etc.

As I posted some days ago, the background signals are changing. If you don't see snow in the next few days then you could have a while to wait for as far as I'm concerned it looks like warming up towards Christmas.

Having had a look at this morning's model output, I am now fully expecting no more than a centimetre of snow here - if that.

I know it's only the weather, but I am genuinely gutted. Having the models tease you all week with constant movements north and south, only for everything to shunt south at the very last minute, is just so disheartening. It's even worse when you consider that this could be our last chance at getting snow all winter.

Previous winters haven't been a problem for me because nearly everywhere has had a lack of snow - but to know that places further south are receiving inches, with the possibility of an ice day on Monday, really sucks. It's the feeling of missing out on something that's the worst.

Oh well, onwards and upwards. Spring will be here before you know it.

well in the far south the cold has yet to reach 6c yesterday, 13c the day before and this mornings radio forecast , wet and windy Sunday 11c , wet on Monday 6c and a chance of sleet, then becoming milder (can it get milder?) and much more changeable ....so yes fearing a few weeks of mild weather now, but I have no evidence of that ...it just frustrates that as soon as bbc monthly goes for cold...the opposite occurs!

Still it's only the weather 😀

With yesterday's maximum temperatures being not all far above freezing, the ingredients were there for what should have been a really cold night in my books since we did have some clear skies. At the very least, I should have been reporting my coldest night of the season so far from that.

Yet as has happened time and time again, too much wind once again prevented the temperatures from dropping all that far, resulting in the temperatures just refusing to drop for long period of time during the night. This then resulted in the minimum temperatures coming out at no lower than -0.8°C at Edinburgh Gogarbank and -1.0°C at the botanic gardens in Edinburgh which in both cases, is only really just below freezing and no more, and that certainly wasn't enough for last night to be the coldest month of the season as it should have been.

Edinburgh Airport wasn't quite so bad as it at least got down to -3°C there. However, those temperatures have been as low as -4°C there during this overall autumn/winter season. However, that happened during November which is part of the autumn and so, we continue to have that situation here where our lowest temperatures of the season hasn't even occurred during the actual winter and given the extent of the northern blocking which is around over the North Pole just now, that just isn't good enough.

Yet in the areas normally impacted by northerlies there is good snow cover, daytime subzero temperatures and a forecast min of -14°C tonight.

Note to self - expect bitter cold from first “continental” southeasterly of the winter.

I tend to do well out of northerlies for snow. Barely even a dusting yesterday morning with rain showers during the day.

Have to say all I am concerned about is tomorrow (not the day after tomorrow). It is looking very marginal where we live - if we turn out to be on the right side of marginal, winter heaven, the wrong side and winter despair. Don't worry, I shall be posting in this thread if we get rain instead of snow tomorrow.

Very underwhelmed by this cold spell. Just had one light snow shower today and that was hours ago. Worse still there has been no sunshine, despite clear skies overhead, as the sun is stuck behind a bank of cloud to the south west Simply infuriating when a day of sun and snow showers was expected.

If it can't get to -5C tonight then as far as I'm concerned this will have been no different to the other lame cold spells of recent winters.
