Is it actually melting to liquid or just disappearing? If the latter then surely it is just sublimating away due to the very low dewpoints, which are widely below -10C today. Here in London the only places that seem to be damp are salted roads and pavements, and badly insulated roofs. The rest of the snow isn't melting, just sublimating.

No it's definitely not sublimating! There are pools of water forming on the surfaces! I've had my thermal imaging camera on it to see what's going on.

Very surprised you have pools of water at -3.5c? The water in mop bucket out the back here (not the most glamourous of measures I admit) is frozen solid and temp is hovering just below 0c.

I'm with you on this one Brian. I noticed at lunchtime here in Kettering how the snow on a lot of the pavements and roads had melted even though it was -1 Degree.C yet there were icicles hanging down at the back of my car!!

Davis VP2 says it's -3.5C. Despite that the rate of thaw when the sun comes out beggars belief. Even when it clouds over the thaw continues on concrete / stone surfaces. It's extraordinary. Never seen anything like it (I mean the combination of thaw and air temperatures well below 0C).

I thought you were near Melton Mowbray? Loads of showers on the radar in that area. You must be the unluckiest person on TWO to avoid any snow from that lot.

There's enough snow on the ground here to protect against that, but I can confirm the sun's power - for the second day in a row it's been heating up branches etc and of course the snow's been drip-drip-dripping from them as a result. Yesterday that stopped the instant the sun went behind the houses across the road. I'd expect the same today, as it's around -2 out there.

So would i, but my feet would get wet...i am looking across to the Isle of Wight and can see the SNOW showers cutting right through the Island, with snow falling 3 miles away -but on the beaches this side, its a beautiful spring day and hard to beieve that it MAY actually snow tomorrow on this side of the Solent, although i still have my doubts that with changes aloft that it will be too warm for snow...the cold has now peaked!

It's great! Like being in the Mid West in late winter - I shovelled the new snow off the drive early this morning and then swept it and now it's clear and bone dry. Makes it a damn sight easier and no need to put vile and destructive salt on anything.

Hmm, this is a moaning thread isn't it. Erm - my moan is that I don't have a decent screen any more for my thermometer sensor which, despite allegedly being okay to mount outside, really needs a screen. So it's saying it's above zero, even though it clearly isn't (as the presence of icicles on the car over the road confirms).


Also, no icicles on my house as the guttering isn't being overwhelmed. I guess I could shovel extra snow on there, or turn my heating pump up a couple of notches to make water flow out the overflow.... nah, on second thoughts I'll leave things as they are!

Definitely the time of year Brian. The solar effects even when cloudy are strong at this time of year and will melt even when below freezing. After a mild winter generally, the ground is simply not cold enough too - especially on S facing paths etc.

Tarmac temperatures have been getting to around 12 degrees C the last few days in the midday sunshine, so thin snow will soon melt. Even as clouds come and go, tarmac temperatures won’t drop back below zero until after dusk. Sublimation is also going on but it requires an order of magnitude more energy to go from ice to water vapour so it’s a secondary process for snow clearance in this situation, but windy, dry encourages the process.

Looks like plenty of showers making it as far west as you. One heavy one passed just to the north over Clitheroe recently. More (not quite as heavy) crossing Huddersfield and Ripponden right now and might hit Blackburn.

Perth to Aberdeen and back this morning. Cold, wintry and windy yes, but nowhere near the snowfall that was forecast. Eastern Scotland was meant to be the place to be but anywhere North of Fife has just had heavy but very brief showers.

Just outside the red warning zone which, judging by the radar, looks accurate as there isn't much shower activity upstream north of fife.
