All the best to you John - can't imagine what a collapsed lung feels like. Hope your recovery is swift

Now then... just popped on here to report that my local sunshine total for July has just exceeded 300 hours, beating 2006's 297.5 hours, which was my previous record for all years back to 2005.

My sunshine values are somewhat approximate but often match the official regional recordings fairly well. What's more, there's still enough of the month left for the total to keep on climbing, so it should be notably above 300 in the end - enough so to give reasonably high confidence that it's gone through that impressive benchmark .

Also worth noting that it's still 18°C outside despite 'only' maxing at 24°C today.

BTW I was going to post that it looks like Wednesday was the first day since July 5 that the temperature failed to reach 28C at an official station, but I now see that Norwich airport just snuck in with a 28.0C, extending the run to 19 days! I think tomorrow will struggle to prolong it to 20 days though.

Buggar me it's sweltering with his humidity. So far we've seen 1mm in rain in the "breakdown"... I'm hoping it will keep off tonight as I'm off to see the Twenty20 at Durham!

Here's a job for someone.

Sitting in e china after another sweltering day and according to wunderground, the max in china today was 40c. (As it was yesterday). it felt hotter. Thing is, i was told by someone here that it never goe above 40c cos if it does, legally the workers can go home.

Anyone find stats for max temps here. Clearly i cant search google for the info. A quick look on wunderground seems to show the daily record highs being 40c, even for guangzhou in the south where i would have thought that at some point it would have been higher.

If this is true, do you think the stats fed to global met data orgs reflect the 'truth' or the truth ??

I could do with an end to this now - was diagnosed with a collapsed lung yesterday so am breathing at half capacity until I recover. Just want some fresh air!

The end of an era: Norwich airport only managed 27.9C max yesterday so by 0.1C we missed out on 20 straight days of 28C+!

Also last night it dipped to 9.7C at Farnborough - the first excursion into single figures IMBY for some time. I noticed when cycling back that the "frost pocket" along the Reading Road near Blackwater was in full effect with cold air draining off the common. Really quite striking how you suddenly hit a cold wall of air.

I'm not sure what constitutes a 'heatwave', but it's very warm again here today.  My sensors are currently showing 27c and 28c, unshielded.
