Had a single thunderclap and some heavy rain about 30 minutes ago in Alresford 🙂

A surprising thread to post in given the rising surface pressure, but the small trough pencilled in the 00Z Thurs fax across the South is generating interest. NAE actually pushes a narrow band of heavy rain/showers across the south later on Weds.
It's not unheard of to see these areas of activity within relatively high pressure cells to produce something of note.

Forecasts indicating thundery showers overnight and into tomorrow. Higher based instability seems present already within the Altocumulus banks

Rather humid with showers breaking out here in the last hour or so.

Well last nights rain appears to have been thunder free despite the thundery nature of some of the mid-level precipitation.

Looking at Saturday and there is some hope for the SE. Soundings for Herstmonceux show CAPE around 750 and instability to 30K+ feet at 1700z

Lightning every few seconds here, but the main activity is to the east. Just had a big overhead crack of thunder.

Edit - OMG - that was ridiculous. Very close strike and shotgun thunder. I think I died a little.

Lightning is getting brighter, thunder louder and longer, and rain heavier. Seems to be to the NW mostly.

Well despite very bright lightning illuminating the landscape, the rain has completely stopped. Seems to be easing off now.

And it's moving away now. A very good display! First nighttime storm since May 2009.

Best nighttime lightning show for many a year. Flashes every few seconds lighting up the sky. Excellent.

BBC forecasts bigging up tonights potential. Nicely explained that colder upper air will override the heat that we are currently importing. Big thunderstorms expected, especially across SE England, East Anglia & East Midlands. Interestingly, ESTOFEX don't even mention it!

I won't be losing much sleep over it tonight but it is something to keep an eye on as it all unfolds tomorrow.
To my own untrained but somewhat experienced eyes, it looks like Norfolk, Lincs and parts of the East coast of England are expected to get the worse of the rain tomorrow.
