Nice little over view of the cold out break Australia experienced this week that brought unusually cold conditions to Australia and ome snow reported http://forum.weatherzone.com.au/ubbthreads.php/topics/1213177/4/Snow_out_of_season_2013_14. This also brought Geoffrey Boycott's jumper out of his suitcase in Adeliade  Must have been cold.

Some nice charts on that link that show how the jet stream buckled nicely and sent cold air surging northwards.

Snow was reported as falling in Blackheath which is around 2 hours west of Sydney and only a month or so ago was in the grip of bushfires!

I'm used to the Greeks stealing our cold weather in winter but this is ridiculous

How exceptional is this, is it the Aussie equivalent of our early summer snow in June 1975?

This winter just gone has been a VERY mild one around Australia. I do notice that we tend to get these late snow events after a mild winter similar to how this can occur in the UK.

It is harder to get a buckle in the jet stream this side of the equator, we don't have the benefit of a large land mass to disrupt the flow to the south of Australia. But when it does happen it can bring very cold air.
