I'd be interested to find out which areas of the UK have seen the most and least snow since December 2010...I'm sure someone somewhere will have records of that (says he, hopefully!).

 

I'll start with my 2p-worth...IMBY (South London), I have only seen 6 inches of the white stuff that fell on Jan 20, 2013...a few dustings otherwise that didn't even give full coverage...Can anyone claim less than that??

In response to Jasons request I live in Withernsea, E.Yorks and here are the snow totals for the town since 2010 :

2010/11 Wasn't in UK...so no record
2011/12 3-9th Feb 3"
2012/13 10-12th Mar 2"
2013/14 No measurable snowfall
2014/15 2nd Feb 0.5"
2015/16 No measurable snowfall...so far

Thanks Philip...I think that puts paid to the blanket statement that the north did well out of March 2013!!

2cm this morning again practically gone by lunchtime  Lowest max this month has been 4.0C last Friday. Last few days have been between 4.1C and 4.5C. Only one other winter month  in my records back to 2005 hasn't managed a sub-4C max and that was February 2014. Before that it would probably have been either Jan/Feb 2000 or maybe even as long ago as Feb 1997.

Got down to -2.4C this evening but wind has picked up and temperature risen above freezing. This really is a hopeless embarrassing joke of a winter for the third year running

I heard that it was -23c in Boston, MASS earlier today!? Coldest in 60 years? - Gosh all happening over there isn't it?!

I've stayed (mostly) in the tiny village of Tarbrax, South Lanarkshire since October 2010. Tarbrax sits at 950 ft (290 m) asl, so although it's not the highest village in Scotland it's probably in the top ten for altitude. Having stayed in the central belt of Scotland all my life, mostly at around 300 ft asl, I was stunned by how much more snowy it was in Tarbrax. I was still living there last winter we had about six weeks of lying snow, with snow depths reaching about five inches on a couple of occasions. In Livingston, where I stay now, there was maybe a fortnight of lying snow and nothing more than a couple of inches. This winter we've had 14 days with falling snow and maybe a week or so of lying snow, reaching no more than an inch or so. The last three days have been the nearest we've had to real winter weather, with an inch of snow, crisp sunshine, near-ice days and frosty nights (on Sunday morning it was below -6C). I know that would be a lot to some of you, but it seems like a snow drought compared to what I got used to in Tarbrax. We have tenants living there for now and I'm still up there occasionally - as usual it's been a lot snowier there. Every winter since 2010 at Tarbrax there has been at least one snowfall of about five inches, usually more than one, and several ice days. I would estimate the average annual snow cover to be about five weeks there, enough to satisfy most winter weather lovers.

-2.4C last night has been the coldest this month but was mostly above freezing after 11pm. There's only been 16 frosts all winter plus one in November. Lowest only -4.2C on Jan 17th which is appalling.

Today is just the type of day I detest the most. Completely grey with some drizzle and a nasty strong southerly wind that has given temps barely any warmer than the northerly and feels far colder because of the wind. Indoor temp fell to 11.9C this afternoon which is the coldest so far this year thanks to these nasty, unpleasant and totally useless conditions

As well as the lack of a decent easterly, we seem to be lacking what I would call a decent snowy breakdown...living and growing up in s e London in the late 60's and 70's and early 80's it was not uncommon to have a decent 4-5 hours snowfall which magically transformed the landscape..we knew it would gradually fizzle out or turn to sleet and rain to be followed by a horrible slush and murk and a rapid thaw...but there was a proper fall of snow that one could really enjoy and appreciate...This type of weather event has been completely lacking down here for many a long year ...if we can't get a decent period of cold snowy weather with snow on the ground for a week or so....then atleast a snowy breakdown might be some compensation...I don't mean 2 mins of sleet followed by rain which is what we might get down on these parts on Thursday am if we are lucky!!

METO has snow warnings out covering all the Yorkshire and Humber region...apart from my little corner of Holderness, where there's nothing..!! same as 2009 and 2013, chance of snow all around but not where I live...my region is very topographically challenged...5m asl, warm sea to the N, E and SE, hills to the NW,W and S...!

I have a good memory for snowfalls, so I think I can give approximate snowfall totals for Tarbrax, South Lanarkshire (950 ft/290m asl). They are very conservative estimates and in fact most of them should probably be higher, since very light snow coverings are commonplace there, hence difficult to recall.

Winter 2010/2011: 40 inches (28 inches fell between 27 Nov and 6th December, 2010)

Winter 2011/2012: 15 inches (12 inches at least fell in December 2012, but there wasn't much after that)

Winter 2012/2013 20 inches (rough estimate, as I was living near Livingston, where there was about 15 inches)

Winter 2013/2014: 15 inches (again a rough estmate as I only spent half of the winter there)

Winter 2014/2015: 20 inches (with about 6 weeks of snow cover)

I now live in Livingston and this winter we have had about 6 inches of snow in total, all from light snowfalls (the last one being this morning). I would estimate that Tarbrax has had about 10 inches, so they look to be heading for about 15 inches again, if this pattern keeps up.

I think most of the north did do well in Mar 2013 but living at sea level on the coast as I do and being so late on it has to be really severe cold to get decent snowfall, we had a couple of days heavy snow showers then it was just icy for rest of the week, 10-15 miles inland they had 6 inches of snow on ground for a week...and 30 miles away on the Wolds it was over a foot deep...!

Do you think that the lack of cold air or sustained cold is due to this stubborn High pressure over the mid Atlantic (Azores)?! Take this chart and play it ...notice each run and the Azores HP that never moves for the whole week!?

Funny how when there's a winter weather system with lots of snow on it coming our way it breaks up before reaching my region and we get half an hour or so of snow yet when it's a rain band we get 12hrs continuous rain...as today...!

 

I am convinced that it's this stubborn Azores HP that could be the reason why we are not getting any sustained or prolonged cold?

A few flakes for fun would still be nice but I've popped in from what feels like an April day in my garden, just to feed the lions, then when they disappear back into their miserable dark dens (their rooms) I'll be back out. It's absolutely stunning in that sunshine. There- that's a winter gloat.

Altitude is everything when it comes to snow, Shap Fell near me in Cumbria is at 1030feet and has twice as many days with snow lying than my Village at 435feet, it's a massive difference.

At 2,000 feet the Mountains in Cumbria have been snow covered most of this month so if the County was 1500 feet higher it would have been a snowy late winter Lol.

I see the f/casts are full of 'potential' again...probably end up being 'putrick' when the weather actually arrives...

Right. I've decided to do away with a modest sized side border in my front garden by flattening it and then grass seeded it (cuts down on maintenance time in the summer). Having just realised it may be too early in the season to put down grass seed and bearing in mind hard frosts are quite rare here on the coastal edge, watch how we'll go onto having a plant sapling-killer of an icy cold March and April.
 Still, got some well overdue fresh air and exercise today.
