Looking like a filthy end to what has been a depressingly damp and very windy day as the squally cold front start to "trail" over Kent producing one long rain streamer. Also as the wind veer ever so slightly more closer to westerly I can hear the rain lashing against my famed west-facing hobby room window.

Truly disgustingly vile stuff, even the air stinks of that salty brine scent. Roll on March and hope we fare better by then.

That 2nd squall line seems to have drawn a  line under the event - much, much calmer now  with a  clearance.  Time for a wander round to see if there is any damage.

Becoming quite gusty again now after a fairly calm hour with heavy rain on and off. The gust record from my garden was broken today after a long standing 36mph, the strongest today was 40mph 14:25.

Can we really call every potent band of showers that comes across a 'squall line'? That term seems to have been somewhat overused today.

Be interesting to get the thoughts of Kevin, Russ & Martin on the Wirral, and Bolty.

Anyhow, whatever it is called this one certainly blasted through here. After things calming down considerably earlier this afternoon to give some pleasant sunshine the wind certainly ramped up again, perhaps even stronger than when the cold front came through. Not as impressive though as the torrential rain wasn't there but still pretty stormy.

Agree with Saint & Bolty for reasons given above. Also they were (if I'm correct) series of cold fronts, the air aloft becoming progressively colder after each squall lines passes, uplifting the milder moist airmass ahead of these into lines of Cb clouds. Vigorous convection was occurring overland as well as the seas, the former despite little or no Sun heating the land up. Anyway, be interested to see what others say.

We seemed to avoid most of the rain and squalls today...
Just a typical winter gale. Mean wind between 40-45mph gusting to 67mph. Very stormy looking sunset, all yellow and mauve.

More of a rain event I think for Cumbria -  yes it gusted near 60mph but I havent read any reports of damage.

BUT rainfall totals are huge, these are not strict 0900-0900hr totals but 24hr totals

Shap - 125.8mm

Keswick 99mm

Warcop - 54mm

Me in the rain shadow 29mm

Will be good to look at the end of the month for the likes of Seathwaite, Honister etc for their daily totals

River Eden has now burst it banks in Appleby, flooding homes and other area like Shap, despite its altitude have also been affected by flooding

A rough day and perhaps an Amber warning for rain should have been issued

This storm certainly caused a lot of havoc with this weekend's sporting fixtures with a lot of the horse racing and rugby league matches being cancelled because of it. It didn't affect men's rugby union or men's football in any way which means that the men's Six Nations' Championships matches were unaffected and of course, I was able as planned, to watch Hibs playing in the men's Scottish Cup.

However, a lot of the women's football matches were cancelled because of this storm and in England, this included all of the games in the English Women's Super League (which is the top division down there in the women's game). Here in Scotland, there were a number of SWPL Cup (which is the equivalent in the women's game, to the men's Scottish League Cup that is currently branded as the Bedfred Cup) which were cancelled because of this storm.

In the rugby, even today's women's Six Nation's Championships match between Scotland and England was cancelled because of this storm. As is the case with the equivalent fixture in the men's tournament, Scotland were due to have the home advantage in this one, but with that game taking place in Glasgow instead of Edinburgh. I have heard that this game will now take place tomorrow afternoon behind closed doors, but the fact that there has been so many sporting postponements shows just how bad this storm has been in terms of its impacts.

The rain seems to have developed more of a west to east component delaying its departure from the SE.

Once more we have lashing rain and hail with horrendous gusts. Nearly 24 hrs of this now. The A65 is impassable and I've had to drive over the dark moors to get home with lightning flickering in the distance its been such a bad storm here

I’ve just run through the 12z GFS for this week. It’s crazy how long the isobars remain tight. I guess there is always a risk of another squeeze from small developments in the flow.

The next two weeks look very unsettled
