It looks like HMG has got its act together with regards to PPE and is now buying from companies in the UK.  We have an order for 3.2 million visors.

Excellent news.

It's taken what seems like an age but in reality is actually quite quick given the regulatory hurdles and the nature of 'safety first' procurement processes.

We had orders from abroad but wanted to keep them in the UK and it was utterly daft that we were selling abroad and buying the same thing from abroad.  Our MD went to the National press last week and did a couple of TV interviews, which seems to have done the trick.

We can produce PPE in this country but the red tape isn’t easy to cut through.  I believe HMG now has someone solely in charge of PPE procurement, which is exactly what is needed and should ensure we have the supplies we need.

However, most businesses should be allowed to reopen, but with social distancing enforced. Some restaurants and takeaways could also reopen in my view, if they have the possibility to distance customers from each other and also from staff. Pubs are a harder ask, since after a few beers people tend to relax their guard. Cinemas and theatres - no chance until something changes.

Takeaways have been allowed to remain open! As for restaurants,i doubt it yet,as its impossible to practise social distancing and for many they would be better off staying shut than operating at say 30% capacity.

Dr Philip Lee was on LBC this morng:

Former Tory MP and doctor: Utter nonsense to call UK's coronavirus response a "success"

A doctor and former Conservative MP has told LBC that the UK's governance has failed spectacularly over the response to Covid-19.

Dr Phillip Lee is uniquely qualified to discuss the government response, having served as a Conservative Minister as well as a doctor.

He told Nick Ferrari that there have been a lot of unnecessary deaths due to the coronavirus pandemic and questioned why the primary goal of the government wasn't to reduce the loss of life.

He said: "The scale of unnecessary loss of life in this country is unacceptable. What angers me most is we could have done so much better.

This should have been no more than plain old common sense.

It isn't as if this virus just erupted out of nowhere overnight with no prior warning; this country probably had more warning of what was coming than some others did. While I cannot speak as an expert on this matter of any kind, it shouldn't take a genius to realise that the sooner our government took steps to mitigate the spread of the virus within the UK as much as they could, the easier it would have been to have contained the virus here and limited the number of people that were infected.

Thing is groups like 'spoons are better placed to function with social distancing in place than your small stand alone local. The pubs are bigger, the app technology that was already in place means Wetherspoons could operate with no counter service. Tables could be reduced and spread out, and either bookable via the app for a period or a physical limit on numbers in each premises put in place and the load factor could be added to the app so people could see whether they'd get into the pub before they arrive. Even moderately priced IP cameras now have automatic people counting capacity so that side of it could even be automated.

How many needless deaths have occurred in the meantime while the red tape was holding everything up?
