Click on the link to see another Edinburgh Spring day. It really is the worst I have known. May is turning out just like the horrible March and April.

It's the lack of sunlight that is so depressing at what can be a lovely time of year. We still have the heating on and even our lamps on in the late afternoon gloom.

The garden is a bedraggled colourless mess. A lot of the bulbs and perennials that would normally have flowered by now, haven't appeared and I'm not sure they will.

I keep hoping at the start of each week things will improve but today it is gloomy and wet and expected to be 13 C. Tomorrow cloudy and damp 12 C 🤢

By the end of today, we will be almost a whole week into May (we will only be short of that by a day) and yet, we have only had a total of 11.6 hours of sunshine during this month which is only 6.1% of the 1991-2020 May average and yet at this time of the year, we should be capable of getting more than that in just a single day.

In addition to that, just the measly total of 0.2 hours of sunshine were recorded over the entire weekend which has just passed with Saturday being completely sunless.

Yet, we have now entered into what should be the lightest period of the year. This is therefore, the very time of year when we really need to be getting some decent sunshine totals if this entire year is to have any chance of being sunnier than average overall.

As I write though, we still haven't had a sunnier than average month here since January, a time of year when that actually adds very little to overall total for the entire year due to that month coming just after the winter solstice.

This means that unless we get a change to a much sunnier pattern of weather very soon, this year is already looking odds on to be duller than average and that is before we have even got to the halfway point in the year.🤢

Yet another day waking up to complete and utter garbage. What an absolute 💩 hole this is. Every single day off is the same. Soul destroying grey filth that just sits there sucking the life out of everything.

The Weekend Curse has just been ludicrous for 18 months now but if you added in all the vile public holidays it would look even worse. Can't remember the last decent one or even partly decent one. It's just endless wrist-slitting grey every single day off. No better than a life of slavery if you are never getting any enjoyment out of life. Constantly denied the ability to do the things you want to do. Trapped like a prisoner in the house. I cannot emphasise how much I despise living here with no quality of life whatsoever 🤬

I didn't think it was possible to get the vile horrific car crash of a May Holiday Weekend we were forced to endure last year but this year is just the same if not worse. Three days of horrific, beyond depressing grey clag that won't shift. Two years on the trot looking like producing fewer than 2 hours of sun across the three days. You just couldn't make it up. This is supposed to be the sunniest month of the year but it's just turned into a complete disaster over the past decade. We finally got rid of the permacast hell Junes but all it did was transfer to May to ruin this month year after year 🤬

It's so ridiculous that even early November hasn't been this consistently awful despite being a terrible month since 2018. Only one year in the past decade has seen under 2 hours sun for the first Monday of the month plus the preceeding weekend. The best month of the year reduced to being worse than the worst year after year.

A nightmare that just keeps on intensifying with each month of rotten stinking crud that passes. There is nothing decent in the outlook at all. Just more horrifically wet garbage according to this http://wxmaps.org/pix/prec4  which seems to show a Scandinivian High developing but not in time to rescue my holiday in Sweden which is looking beyond horrific with stupefyingly low temperatures forecast for my arrival on Wednesday afternoon. Just one kick in the teeth after another 🤮🤮🤮

. Not the biggest fan of sunshine myself, but I sort of need a spell of it now to help dry out the garden and get the knee high grass cut.

This is typically the driest period of the year for here, but drying is as poor as it is in December.

Another lovely day warm mostly sunny day and house temps now very decent 25C so while bedroom coolest 22C will put summer light quilt tomorrow.  Conservatory helped a lot to warm indoors well was 34C yesterday and same today but was 39.2 because I got up late after working night shift to open the doors to let the heat in as it was 20.5 living room.

Awful completely sunless day making three out of three totally vile days in the worst May Holiday Weekend ever endured. Two years on the trot where the three days have failed to total even two hours sun is beyond disgusting. Can't imagine any previous occasion when it would have been this bad. Even 1983 managed 3 hours in total and, until now, that truly represented the nadir of spring weather 🤮

Every year between 2007 and 2013, except 2010, managed at least 20 hours whereas this has now been reached only once since 2014 demonstrating just how poor a month May has become since then. Even the rotten 2010 holiday was better than any of the past three repugnant offerings which are so far from acceptable it's beyond surreal.

May Holiday Weekend Sunshine

2024 (4-6 May): 1.1 🤢🤢
2023 (29 Apr – 1 May): 1.7🤢🤢
2022 (30 Apr – 2 May): 8.1🤢
2021 (1-3 May): 15.1
2020 (8-10 May): 13.8
2019 (4-6 May): 18.3
2018 (5-7 May): 23.5😎
2017 (29 Apr – 1 May): 6.0🤢
2016 (30 Apr – 2 May): 19.7
2015 (2-4 May): 17.1
2014 (3-5 May):13.4
2013 (4-6 May): 28.1😎
2012 (5-7 May): 20.0
2011 (30 Apr – 2 May): 34.9😎😎
2010 (1-3 May): 9.8🤢
2009 (2-4 May):21.1
2008 (3-5 May): 23.5😎
2007 (5-7 May): 27.0😎

At the time the 2007-12 period seemed like a truly dire era due to the worst run of summers in recorded history. At least we had good springs and even some good winters. What the hell do we have now? Absolutely nothing. The winters are the pits, the springs are the equivalent of the 2007-12 summers, the summers are nowhere near as bad as then but still not great and autumns are as hideous as ever. The decade with nothing to offer. That is the 2020s 🙄🤬

That was an unexpectedly pleasant BH weekend.

Almost totally dry, a fair bit of sunshine, decent temps.

Given through most of last week the forecast was for lots of showers, it worked out very well.

The horrific permacast hell continues in the East of Scotland with day after day of unabated misery🤬

I'm currently in Edinburgh experiencing the same dire grey overcast skies as when I was last here in November. Seen almost no sun since last Friday. I just can't adequately express how angry and depressed this demoralising rubbish is making me feel. It's the worst spell of weather of the whole revolting endurance test Spring.

May used to be the best month of the year but now it's been ruined beyond belief by being infiltrated by the 21st century clagfest hell.

Can now see this spring turning out as dull as 1983, a horror show outlier so bad that it should have a return period of centuries. There is just nothing that will produce anything remotely decent any more.

Just the same tedious mind-numbing predictable and utterly woeful dross every single Sunday. Absolutely disgusting overcast filth every single week that defies any sort of rational explanation. There can't be anywhere else on earth that has to endure this soul destroying and demoralising crap week in week out 🤬🤬🤬

Not a single sunny Sunday throughout April and May last year, which was horrific like nothing ever experienced, and yet here we are one year later enduring exactly the same hell. 1.6 hours average throughout April and May last year, 2.2 hours this year. An absolute car crash that is on a par with expected levels of sun during the darkest days of winter. Never known anything like this at any time of year ever 🤬🤬🤬

Last Sunday was the only good Sunday I've experienced in May for the past two years because I was in Sweden enjoying marvellous skies with lenticular clouds on a boat trip from Vaxholm to Stockholm. The sort of skies that used to be common here but are no longer seen. We no longer get any type of clouds here not even cumulus. Just clag 🤮🤮🤮

Weather in Sweden was amazing after a grim start. Brilliant blue skies and generally healthy conditions in stark contrast to the revolting claggy May being experienced here. Off the scale of horrors. The mean min is currently running at a sickening 9.1C, 1.5C above anything ever recorded before thus bearing testimony to the proliferation of grotesque clag infested muck and the entire absence of clear fresh weather that would normally be seen at this time of year. There hasn't been a single colder than average night with an absolute low of 6.2C when the average min is 6.0C. Last air frost on 4th March weeks before anything ever recorded before 👎

An utterly awful and depressing spring more like a 21st Century autumn 🤢🤢🤢

To me, it is just the constant sight of almost constant grey skies which can be so depressing at times and if there's anything good about those darkest days of winter, it's the fact that there's so little daylight around at that time of the year which means that we at least don't have to endure that so much then.

At the moment, we're experiencing our best spell of weather of this year so far but even with that, far too many days are still continuing to be spoilt by yet more easterly muck coming in from off the North Sea.

As I write, we are now just over a month away from the summer solstice and the longest day of the year in terms of daylight hours. Yet, we still haven't had a single day during this year so far which has delivered at least 12 hours of sunshine to these parts. At Edinburgh Gogarbank, the highest daily sunshine total of this year is 10.3 hours of sunshine as recorded on Friday 17 May 2024 but that is actually very poor fare for what is actually our best spell of weather of this year so far, especially given the fact that we are now approaching the summer solstice.

The end result of this is that during this month so far, we have only had 40.6% of our 1991-2020 May average sunshine at Edinburgh Gogarbank and yet, we are now almost two thirds of the way through this month.

This means that if we're to have any chance of getting a sunnier than average year this year, we need to be doing a lot better than that.🤢😡

Meanwhile in Hertfordshire the weather has been better overall during the last week than the forecasts and models were showing. Decent amounts of sunshine, mainly dry and feeling quite warm in mostly light winds. Yesterday was the breeziest day for a while but this was countered by the sunny skies.

You can see why the CET is so far above average this month.
