Conclusion

September 2024 was a colder than average month overall and although there was a brief period of summer-like conditions in the middle of the month, that was nothing compared to the spell of hot weather at the beginning of last September which gave us last year's hottest day.

It was a slightly wetter than average month at Edinburgh Gogarbank but some stations in Edinburgh recorded a slightly drier than average month and even at Edinburgh Gogarbank, the number of official rain days was slightly below average.

Finally, September 2024 was yet another duller than average month overall and after the brief interruption in August to the run of duller than average months since January, normal service has once again been resumed in that department.

The north of Edinburgh, usually always missing out on snow events which occur not just within the rest of Scotland or the UK, but also within the rest of Edinburgh.

A very variable month here, and much more autumnal compared with recent years (where it's been very much a summer's month). The feel of things has varied massively as well - one week warm and sultry, the next clear Arctic air and a distinct "nip in the air" feeling. The latter resulted in the central heating clicking on, briefly, a couple of times (set to 16.5)... unheard of in recent years in September!
It was wetter than average but not massively so, we avoided the deluges of just a few miles further west.

Remarkable, isn't it? No surprise to see Sheppey standing out as being "near normal", whereas less than 10 miles away it's over 200% - it matches what we saw repeatedly during the month. It's not just here, of course, there are other areas with sharp contrasts, albeit it does seem more extreme here. It means for many of us that someone not far away will have a completely different view of the month!

The wolf centre is in the 300% range... I'm surprised they've not sunk into the mud!

The Anomaly maps are fascinating.

Western Scotland looks to have had a cracker of a month - sunshine levels 130-170% of average; rainfall 30-75%; number of days rain fell also well down; ave max temp 0.5-2.5c above.

The pressure system for this September resembles more of that of typical April and May with the negative NAO than it should be for this time of the year.
