It looks like the first named storm of the season, Storm Ashley, will arrive this weekend. This morning's UKV shows max gusts of around (the chart below is still using a slightly thinned grid, so it's possible an odd grid point could be a touch higher)  107mph in the Western Isles.

It never ceases to astonish how far and quickly storm systems like this one generates a swell which impacts us even though the storm system is hundreds of miles away.

I am reminded of Walter Macken's 'Rain on the Wind' with this potential storm. In the book, he gave a semi-fictional account of the tragedy that occurred off the west coast of Ireland during the late October storm of 1927.  One stand out moment of the event in the book was the deathly calm seas and moonlight as the men were out fishing in their Currachs. All was going well until they noticed  an unknown Currach, manned by 3 or 4 deathly white figures, sail by them and away into the night without saying a single word. A short while later, all hell broke loose and the rest is heart-breaking history.

Little more than a run of the mill stiff breeze here in (inland) Galway. Think this will be just another coastal wind event.

Pretty much on the wane now. Top gusts at nearest inland stations were 63 kts (72 mph) and 51 kts (59 mph). Saw a couple of reports of 70 kts at Mace Hd on the outer Galway coast, which is about 80 mph.

Winds at Edinburgh Gogarbank gusting up to around 47mph from the SSW, so it's quite a wild evening here although I've seen far worse than that before.
The north of Edinburgh, usually always missing out on snow events which occur not just within the rest of Scotland or the UK, but also within the rest of Edinburgh.

Just driven up the A1 from Leeds to Edinburgh. Pretty scary to the Lee of High Ground. Had to wrestle the steering wheel most of the time. Gusts up to 55-57 mph

Highest wind gusts at Edinburgh Gogarbank now up to around 49 mph from the SSW although we now appear to be past the actual peak of that for now at least.

It will soon be bedtime for me, but I can see it being a very noisy night ahead with all of that going on.

Just another example of how the strength of Atlantic storms, and mean wind speeds more generally, are on the slow and steady decline over the last couple of decades, which more than coincidentally, is aligned with rising SSTs.

I had experience driving up the A1 from Epsom to Boston Spa to visit my old school in early June 1995 with NE gale force so my car battle against it as it took nearly 5hrs then next day on way back was below 4hrs as same NE flow aided the car less headwind despite same speed at 70.  We had lot of gales from the north east that month before great summer commenced.

There was a 65mph gust shortly before midnight then about 30 minutes later power was out for an hour I suspect turned off to resolve a problem elsewhere.
Through yesterday was otherwise a normal Octoberish day, it touched 50mph and about 7mm of rain.

Nothing too out of the ordinary here last night. It got quite windy in the run-up to midnight with a few heavy showers passing through, but other than that, it wasn't anything too unusual here. The maximum gust recorded on my PWS was 41mph.

Surprisingly different experience here. We had sustained strong winds for several hours, with the strongest gusts shaking the windows (which is rare). I was thinking to myself it was the worst winds in quite some time.
