From the National Weather Service

... Excessive heat warning remains in effect from 11 am PDT /11 am
MST/ this morning to 9 PM PDT /9 PM MST/ this evening...

An excessive heat warning remains in effect from 11 am PDT /11 am

below 4000 feet in southern Nevada... southeast California and
northwest Arizona.

* Expected temperatures: Mojave Desert areas including Las Vegas...

118 to 122. Kingman... 99 to 102.

* Timing: today is expected to be the hottest day... with
unseasonably hot temperatures also expected Tuesday.

* Greatest impacts: children... pets... the elderly... the
homeless... and people with chronic ailments are the most
susceptible to heat-related illness. Heat exhaustion...
cramps or in extreme cases heat stroke can result from
prolonged exposure to these conditions. Friends... relatives
and neighbors should check on people who may be at risk.

Precautionary/preparedness actions...

An excessive heat warning is issued when temperatures are forecast
to reach dangerous levels that will stress the body if precautions
are not taken.

Take extra precautions if you work or spend time outside. When
possible... reschedule strenuous activities to early morning or
evening. Know the signs and symptoms of heat exhaustion and heat
stroke. Wear light weight and loose fitting clothing when possible
and drink plenty of water.

To reduce risk during outdoor work... the occupational safety and
health administration recommends scheduling frequent rest breaks in
shaded or air conditioned environments. Anyone overcome by heat
should be moved to a cool and shaded location. Heat stroke is an
emergency... call 911.

I am in Chicago from 9th to 29th June and upon arriving was nice and warm which nearly matched the Monday weather back home.  Yesterday was a horrid day with overcast conditions and general heavy rain arrived in the early afternoon and into overnight with unseasonable low maxes around 18C and down to 15c in the heavy rain.  Today saw the brief sunlight and temps back to 68-70F but it remained cloudy and misty/smoggy conditions with poor air quality.  Risk of storms tomorrrow then sunnier at the weekend but temps only 19C and 12C overnight which is really low for here and more like late May temps back home.

Massive contrast to last June 2011 here when it was baking hot in the 80's, 90's and up to 100F non-stop while UK was in opposite way.  Nice to see lovely prolonged warm settled weather there and warmer than here for a change.

Hi folks, just coming out of a severe weather event for the GTA over the past few days as a strong cold front pushed through. The same cold front that brought an infamous double tornado to a town in Nebraska and indeed brought strong winds and a Tornado warned cell for Hamilton on Tuesday evening. In the event we got heavy rain and wind gusts above 70kph after a day high of 31c, the highest of the year so far.

Further north in Southern Ontario a confirmed Tornado hit the small town of Angus, Ontario south of Barrie. Destroying over 100 homes and injuring at least 1 person seriously. This storm also caused widespread power outages to NW areas of the GTA, parts of Toronto and elsewhere briefly across the Lakeshore area.

Significant weather event and there's been a few days of rain or Thunderstorms over the past week despite the relativally warm conditions.

Blue Jays still going good, down in New York for game two tonight against the Yankees.

Take Care folks

Been in Orlando since Sat and had a storm nearly everyday, seen some terrific lightning displays already, none better than this evening, sat on the porch of the villa with a Sam Adams watching the storms to the south, tracking them on the iPad with the local Doppler radar

Bit of a Shame i have to take the wife and kids to the parks every other day!

Apologies for being so lax with posting in this thread of late. Still following the NA weather just not finding the time to contribute!

its been interesting to note that despite the widespread predictions of a cool summer for the Great Lakes, following on from the very cold winter and spring, Toronto actually recorded a warmer than average June (19.8c against the average of 18.6c). I wonder what the rest of the summer will bring.

It's been a hot start to July in the Maritimes with Fredericton, NB opening the month with daily maxes of 33c, 34c, 31c and 29c. It's all change today as the remnants of Arthur sweep through the region. Temps will be suppressed in the mid teens and the forecast calls for 100mm of rain, with more in some spots!

Stewart, glad you had a good break in BC, lovely part of the world. June was warmer than average but cloudy in NE Fife. Hoping for better in July. Much the same could be said of the Blue Jays who will need to up their game to stay in contention for the AL East. I'd love to be proved wrong but without a couple of astute trades as we head towards the trade deadline I don't think we have what it takes to win the division.

ps Joe, sounds great - you should post a pic if you get the chance.

Hi folks,

Resurrecting this from page 4, man it's quiet on here these days! Must be all that heat over there

Here in the GTA its been a normal summer, if that means anything it basically covers some rainy days, one or two good storms and heat but not majorly hot. So far at least, every time the humidex touches 35+ it's shot down by a cold front and associated storm features and things re-set for a few days.

Case in point yesterday actually. After a good couple of days of warmth with temps in the upper 20c's range, cold front and showers into proper rain for Wednesday morning only to break to late evening sunshine but much cooler temps. Watched the Spurs v Toronto FC at BMO Field last evening with friends, was very pleasant without the humidity.

Hope all is well with my Calgarian and Fife friends, high winds for AB today and high temps for parts of Scotland maybe not Eastern Coastal districts of Fife?

Will try and post more often on here, normal life just keeps getting in the road!

Take care folks

Good morning from a damp NE Fife, after a very pleasant month of July. No heatwave here on the coast but we ended up with an average max of 20.7c (normal 19.3c)!

Meanwhile the east and west coasts have been the place to be in July in Canada. St Johns, NF has had more >25c days than Toronto or Ottawa since May! the July average max came in at 25.3c (normal 20.7c), and the all time humidex record was broken last week. Toronto meanwhile had an average max of 25.4c in July (normal 27.1c).

Stewart, hope you are having a good summer, even if it's slightly cooler than normal by Southern Ontario standards. The Blue Jays have picked things up again after a very poor June and remain in contention in the AL East. But with no trade deadline signings can the team be consistent enough to compete through September? Watch this space!

A big drop in upper air temps for parts of the upper mid west USA next week as seen below. Minneapolis might struggle to get into double digits by Thursday, some forecasts going for only 9 or 10C with a chilly NW wind blowing down from Canada, temps could be 10C below the seasonal average.

What has given Calgary an advantage in this snowy period is it's elevation, it's between 3,500 and 4,300 feet asl
