Cold in eastern Canada and US at the moment. Been a fair bit of snow in places too.

High of only -1c in Quebec city at sea level and as far south as central France with strong April sunshine and light winds. Shows cold uppers can make a mockery of the suns strength.

One to keep an eye out for is an excessive heat warning due to take effect in the U.S. Western states over the next few days.

and where I am currently in western Canada there's a warning for heavy snow on a nearby high pass tonight, and tomorrow looks like heavy rain all day and a forecast high of 8C

Slightly alarming forecast for my area this week! Autumn has been generally mild here so I think this will be a bit of a shock:

https://weather.gc.ca/city/pages/bc-79_metric_e.html

Away from perhaps southern California and the far SW, it doesn't look like many areas in North America are going to escape a spell of cold weather in the first half of December, with a possible secondary (and bigger) shot of cold air moving south after the weekend:

http://www.accuweather.com/en/weather-news/polar-plunge-to-grip-majority-of-contiguous-us-this-week/70000175

It would certainly make for some more interesting weather, with the ramping up of lake effect snow in the east towards the end of next week, possibly some decent rains across California (and snow for the mountains) looking ahead, and maybe even the odd nor'easter, depending on how the pattern evolves.

The bitter Arctic outbreak continues in USA & Canada. Up to 1 metre of lake effect #snow & snow arrives in #Vancouver tonight & Friday. CF

Winter taking its grip now on most of the US; even snow to lower levels in Portland OR. Next week will be even colder, forecast lows of 25F in Houston which is unusual.

I should own up to having been in Burlington for the last week....

It snowed for almost 24 hours from Sunday morning to Monday morning and left around 10-12 cm here.  Briefly above zero on Sunday and Monday but today the maximum was around -4C and the wind has picked up making it feel pretty cold.  Minus double digits for the next two nights.

The snow belt areas downwind of the Great Lakes have taken quite a hammering over the last few days.

Another major storm is predicted for Friday night into Saturday; there's a risk of a snow/rain mix here if the LP tracks too far north but it's still very much up in the air.  If it stays as snow there may be another 10-15cm to add.

Minus 6c here at the moment, in mid-afternoon. With the windchill it's quite unpleasant outside, with blowing snow. There's a snow warning out for here but the radar shows the snow band grinding to a halt just north of Toronto.

Some areas of Texas are going to get some serious temperature drops on Sat. Houston for example is going to set a record high of 80F on Saturday but by Sunday morning will be at 32F or less.

Most places are going from Summer weather to winter within a few hours...infact forecasters are saying within 20 minutes the temp will drop 50F. Would love to see that happening!

Snow has set in across southern Ontario this evening associated with our second Colorado low of the week. Likely snowfall amounts south of Toronto in the 5-10cm range but double that up towards areas around Georgian Bay. Briefly turning to rain on Saturday as a warm front skirts across but another sharp Arctic blast on Sunday with temps falling away to overnight -15 to -20.

Meanwhile the Maritimes have had blizzards and face more followed by a switch to plus 10C on Sunday.

I know someone who lives in Philadelphia, and he absolutely hates the wild temperature swings. He says Europe is lucky in that regard, and he thinks it's great that so many places in England can grow subtropical plants that would probably be killed in the gulf states.

I don't begrudge the Americans their cold weather and snowy Christmases.

But I do consider it unfair that, instead of exporting some cold air to this side of the Atlantic, all they do is use the temperature gradient to fire up the jet stream and condemn us to weeks of wind and rain from the west.

54% of North America had snow cover as of yesterday compared to 36% last year. Temps are set to rise as the week goes on and most states will be enjoying a green Christmas by the looks of it.

Chicago was in single digits on Sunday and a low of -15F. By Saturday night, temps are projected to be 46F with potential for storms and rain. A big contrast on the last 3 weekends of snow for sure.

Of course let us hope that improves our chance of cold weather.

Blimey! Had to dig deep for this thread.

Heavy rain & snow-melt in California leads to evacuation of area downstream of a damn that's in trouble due to the volume of water flowing over it.

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-us-canada-38952847

I guess it's a case of trying to store as much water as possible for the water authorities in the California region, but does this mean that the Californian drought, which had been becoming increasingly serious, is now relaxed?

To add, Mammoth, in Central Cali, has had the most snow in a January since records began - a gargantuan 246" (20 feet).

Overall 430" for the season; not a record, but there's still over a month & half to go. The record was 668" set in 2010/11, but since then, each year has had below average - the worst being 2014/15, where only 176" fell, the second lowest on record, behind only 1976/7, where just 94" fell. Course, everything's relative!

Yes that Oroville Dam spillway issue is a bit of a worry and indicative of the rainfall that parts of CA have had recently. Hopefully a respite for a few days may avoid any more serious issues. "Making hay when the sun shone" would have avoided some of these issues by the sound of things (re. spillway maintenance). Perhaps they thought it would never become that wet again!
