Meanwhile, I have a friend in Pennsylvania who is furious because he despises snow and everything about it.. his car is completely buried and his road remains unplowed. This is the same person who stayed in Windsor with his English wife and actually liked the climate because it never gets very cold, and spent most of the winter here walking around in a shirt and was bemused that people were wearing winter coats at 8C. He intends on moving here in the near future.

The fact is with the USA the weather changes and is way more volatile - I doubt they would get another snowstorm of this severity and magnitude and it will probably turn milder. So They would only need to put up with this for a few days or a week depending on how long it lasts.

When we get rainy weather with wind - we are stuck with it for weeks or even months as November and December proved it. If he prefers wind and rain ....jolly good I say. I know I hate it as do most people especially those in Cumbria and Yorkshire.

Made me laugh to see the 'Mercuns emptying supermarket shelves of food. I now we occasionally get panic buying when a severe weather event is forecast, but I imagine the yanks actually do eat the food mountain they buy. Over the course of a weekend.

Well, reporting from the suburbs of Philadelphia, We have received 2 Feet 5" at least, at my location.  with deeper spots dotted a bout.

Thankfully, My American friends are more sensible and already had enough food, for this two day wonder. and stayed home safe. I lost count on how many people i saw trying to drive in the snow, 80% of them got stuck and we're swerving all over the place like lunatics.

I'm beginning to think the propensity of the media to distort reality for the purpose of increasing revenue or page traffic (see The Daily Express and the ever reliable Exa**a Weather) is not only creeping into more mainstream forecasting outlets but affecting the coverage of what's actually happening.

This event is significant - I do not dispute that - but it isn't actually that unusual. A 'nor'easter' of this magnitude occurs roughly once every four years and as recently as 2006 a winter storm affecting the whole NE USA region dumped 40" in Virginia and was directly responsible for over 100 fatalities:

https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/North_American_blizzard_of_1996

But of course, promoting this particular storm as 'a rather nasty snowstorm of typical magnitude based on recent climatology' doesn't sell copy like 'Snowzilla to bury New York' does, but we shouldn't let facts get in the way.

They did under estimate the snow in NYC - NYC was forecasted 6-12" of snow when they received almost triple that amount of 30".

DC area was forecasted to receive in excess of 2ft of snow when they actually got 1ft!? - There was meant to be more snow in DC than NYC - what happened? did the snowstorm hang around NY longer?

An interesting and funny video - esp the one after:

Brutally cold in southern Ontario this morning. -26c currently in Toronto with -40c windchill. That air temperature is the coldest I've seen in Toronto for some years. -29c in Ottawa with -45c windchill. Further north -38c in Timmins with -49c windchill.

Edit: quick check reveals that the Toronto reading may be the coldest since Jan 1994 (-31c), eclipsing the -25.5c from last February.

Just to confirm what I thought yesterday:

http://weather.gc.ca/warnings/weathersummaries_e.html

One interesting thing to note is the official minimum temperature of -26.3 C at Pearson Airport is the lowest temperature officially recorded there since 16 January 1994 when the temperature tumbled to a frigid -31.0 C.

That's right Marcus, no-one enjoys those kind of temperatures with wind chill, even winter sports enthusiasts. You can't even go out and skate on your local rink if it's that cold, it's just miserable.

Feels cold enough here at 2C.. -26C? No thank you!

Did experience -21C in Toronto nearly 10 years ago.. and it wasn't that bad, but only for a short time.

Slightly O/T- sorry- but hearing the wishes for experiencing these low temps- which appeals to me too - I still find it amazing that Shawbury's -25 and Newport's -26 in the 81-82 winter were within driving distance!

plenty to note on this short forecast (old news now I realise); in particular the contrast with the SW US (30C S of LA) and the sudden rise forecast for New York from -16 to +12C during Tuesday.

A foot of snowfall forecast for Ottawa today followed by a forecast low of -32c on Thursday morning, while Montreal is under a freezing rain warning.

No live cams for Ottawa that I can find unfortunately but it certainly looks snowy on the traffic cams.

Quick update on the Ottawa snowfall - it turned out to be its heaviest on record, with 51.2cm (20.15 inches) falling, beating the previous record by 12cm. I'd happily take a 1.2cm snowfall let alone half a metre right now!

After a mild interlude this weekend looks like winter will return to eastern Canada as we head towards late Feb/early March!
