Who's going to call it 'covid-19'? What about Sussex Flu? Especially as there's now a self-isolation case (i.e. precautionary, not confirmed) associated with Worthing hospital; not stated whether worker or visitor. EDIT now stated to be someone working in A&E who was in contact with a 'small number' of patients


Steve Walsh, the superspreader, seems to be a sensible sort of person and not inclined to exploit the media. The worries about local schools seem to be associated with his role as Scout leader but his immediate family in Sussex (in contrast to the friends in the Alps where he stopped on the way home) seem not to have picked up the infection. 


Not enough is yet known to go beyond recommending "basic hygiene and don't go to the surgery f you suspect you have it"  but health authorities do themselves no favours by refusing to come on the media and admitting ignorance. That merely stokes conspiracy theories which are worse than an admission of limited knowledge.

It would solve a lot of the world’s problems. 3.5 billion people instead of 7 billion.

For me, the most interesting aspect of this story is human behaviour and hysteria. We've already seen a big drop in Chinese takeaways. Anecdotal Reports of Chinese looking people being abused on public transport by English yobs. We are living in the era of idiocracy, fuelled by the popular press. It could be quite easy to whip up mob mentality and send a group of Tommy Robinson types to smash up Wing Yip supermarkets

You never did let me know if you regarded the virus as ‘out of control’ in the UK as the number of cases doubled? Assumed you would confirm that given your earlier comment about Singapore.

Singapore has 50 confirmed cases now - so the current situation there is of an order of magnitude greater than in the UK.

I think there’s clearly a risk but predominantly from people carrying the virus but not displaying any obvious symptoms.  If this guy from Brighton was typical there’d be many more cases by now - but there aren’t.


I know you like to be scornful of my caution but I see no value in making unsubstantiated predictions.


In any event nothing we write will make a jot of difference.

Others may not want to make themselves known for fear of being locked in isolation for weeks. I certainly wouldn't come forward, unless I was at deaths door
