Cases in Italy not in exponential growth.

Is this because of a saturation in the ability of the country to test cases? Or is this a genuine growth rate.

If this is a fair representation of the number of cases (doesn't have to be all, as long as it isn't saturated) then it suggests an R0 of about 1 even if the growth rate is slightly non-linear.

In other words this has not yet spiraled out of control in the same way it has in Iran.

South korea looks barely exponential but I'm more confident that it's not saturated.

Back of the envalope calculation suggests R0 of about 1.5.

While the coronavirus presents "some challenges", it will not be anything like the scale of the deadly Spanish Flu pandemic, England's chief medical officer has said.

Speaking to health professionals at the Nuffield Trust Summit in Windsor, Professor Chris Whitty said: "We are not heading into a H1N1 1918 flu pandemic situation but the coronavirus does present some challenges for us. It definitely will for a period. How big remains to be seen."

Do we believe this or has Whitty gone long on the markets?

Another bloke I know has spent the last week locked up in his room doing nothing but singing songs by Frank Sinatra, Tony Bennett, Pery Como, Matt Monro & Dean Martin.

He's got the crooner virus.

Yesterday, much was made of the Pope greeting the faithful in Rome for Ash Wednesday.

Today's news:

"Pope Francis is sick and skipped a planned Mass in Rome, officials said, just a day after he was seen touching masked well-wishers in the city."

Now, even if Pope Francis caught the virus yesterday, he would not have any symptoms yet - but it is an amusing juxtaposition nonetheless.

P.S. Another piece of whimsy:

"A British company called "Corona Holidays" has been caught up in the coronavirus outbreak alarm, despite having no direct connection to any of the virus hotspots.

A spokesperson told our travel writer Greg Dickinson that members of the public have started to call them asking for general travel advice"

- great name for a travel company at the moment.

---------------------------------------------------

Iran - government affected as senior members of the government succumb to the virus - that could have a massive effect.

Health experts have suggested Iran is underplaying the extent of the virus, with one group of Canadian-based researchers estimating 18,000 infections throughout the country.

That in itself is likely a huge underestimate.

'They have no idea': government failing on coronavirus, say GPs

He said none of his patients who had travelled back from at-risk countries had been given any information at airports or sea ports on what to do if they developed symptoms of coronavirus. James said his practice had seen patients arriving back from affected areas, some of whom had been on cruises around many regions experiencing coronavirus outbreaks, who had not been given any information on what to do if they developed symptoms.

Other patients reported flying back from the affected countries and finding there was no information on arrival at Heathrow regarding public health advice. The lack of information has led to many booking appointments with their GP, which risks infecting other patients with weaker immune systems. “It’s a no-brainer, the government need to tell those who are coming back what to do,” James said. “They’ve missed almost everyone at this stage of arrivals.”

Despite his surgery website and posters clearly instructing people who have travelled to affected regions in recent weeks not to enter the GP practice, James said some patients have “breezed past our bright yellow posters suggesting they stay at home. There seems to be an attitude of: ‘We don’t care if we infect a whole GP surgery full of people,’” he said.

Of course, France and Austria should have closed their borders with Italy at the weekend, but they didn't so France, Austria and Germany are going to face the same issues as Italy - only a matter of time.

This will happen just as Leeds are about to get promoted. Then they'll find some way of making us stay in the Championship.

Following  the implementation at work, I've ordered some alcohol  anti viral hand gel.  I'll be supplying some   to my elderly (mid 80s) parents.

I think we need to assume  this is going to be widespread and that chaos will ensue within the NHS and elsewhere.  I think it's best to try and ensure my parents limit their visits to various Dr surgeries and clinics for any reason (which is easier said than done given their various morbidities  !).

  • tourist or tourist couple arrive in northern Italy from China - they have no symptoms, but are carrying the virus

  • Italian man catches the virus - let's call him patient A.

  • Patient A feeling unwell attends hospital and (this is the crucial part and is the reason why the authorities in Italy are as mad as hell) - he is not checked for corona virus, is told he has the flu and to go home and rest.

  • Hospital is now a centre for the contagion as well as patient A. People attending the hospital are infected as well as those who come into contact with Patient A and the Chinese couple (they think it was a couple who later turned up in southern Italy, felt unwell and then tested positive).

So that is how it spread - one of the Italian super spreaders (not Patient A) was a sportsman who (completely innocently since he was asymptomatic) travelled and spread the virus widely before he too felt ill and was checked for the virus.
