Haven't been down "t" pub since last Sat - it was like the Marie Celeste - never seen it so quite .

I would agree, pubs  have got to be the best place to catch Corona after the Tube.  Not only is  it peeps-to- peeps   transmission, you have bog door  handles , tables, plates, cutlery and tables that have  not been properly cleaned.

Not sure about the complementary nuts though - I reckon the ol' Corana would have a problem getting "house room"  due to  the zillion other pathogens scullin' about in there !

Are there any corona parties? Or personal ads for people seeking carriers to infect them?

As for Beast's question about why it took off in Italy - I did read that a hospital in the region failed to follow procedure - someone turned up with a fever and instead of being tested, sat in a waiting room with all the other A&E cases and was assumed to have influenza so had ample time to infect others, was not tested for COVID-19 and it spread from there - this is from CNN:

"Italian authorities were on the defensive Tuesday as they faced tough questions over the country's handling of the novel coronavirus, which is rapidly spreading across the country's northern regions.

Italian Prime Minister Giuseppe Conte has tried to allay fears that the central government is unable to contain the virus, after he was forced to admit that a hospital in the northern town of Codogno had mishandled the region's first coronavirus case and had contributed to the deadly virus' spread.

According to Italy's Corriere della Sera newspaper, a 38-year-old man with coronavirus symptoms had to wait 36 hours at a hospital in Lombardy before he was tested for the virus, during which he had contact with hospital staff and visiting friends and family.

The man, identified only as Mattia, was admitted to the emergency room in Codogno, Lombardy, early on February 19 with respiratory problems, reported the Corriere della Serra and CNN.

Mattia was tested at around 4 p.m. on February 20 — 36 hours after being admitted — and at 9 p.m. the infection was diagnosed, according to Corriere della Sera. The delay in testing was because he wasn't recently returned from China, the newspaper said."

Big increase in the UK count. I think we'll rapidly move up the table. Not clear whether it's because we're testing more. Regardless, the direction of travel is now set IMHO.

It could just as easily happen here or anywhere.  I think suggesting it was somehow 'mishandled' is just using hindsight, which is ever so easy and ever so pointless.

Occurs to me that one of the best places to spread Covid-19 would be in a packed Indian cold-call center ...... So with luck, it'll take off big time on the sub-continent and the number of calls to UK phones will half overnight

Germany has broken ranks with the WHO (from the BBC website):

""The coronavirus outbreak in China has become a global pandemic," says German Health Minister Jens Spahn.

Speaking to German lawmakers on Wednesday, he said: "The situation is changing very quickly... what's clear is that we have not yet reached the peak of the outbreak."

The World Health Organization (WHO) has not yet labelled the outbreak a pandemic."
