The table linked on the last page had berkhamsted's county, Herts with the most cases - 13 so it does sound like a relative hotspot.

Just down the road from here.

Early days but signs the death rate in the UK is high. Comparable to Italy. If that's the case we may have imported the more severe variant.

Let's agree to disagree.  I have been providing some much-needed balance in a thread that you and others have turned into a hysterical misrepresention of actual events as they have happened.

Covid-19 seems to be widely in circulation now. It was in Italy for some time before it was identified; ditto North America and no doubt elsewhere.

I'm not sure what you think your draconian measures would have achieved and I know you haven't thought about the consequences.

I was not "hysterical" about cruise ships as floating petri dishes and I have been right about the benefits of early intervention on travel from affected regions. The evidence speaks for itself - look at Taiwan for example.

Japan appears to be doing a decent job of containment too, despite an early pick up in cases.

Europe is now the regional hotspot and it is going down the same road China did in the early days of the outbreak there. It is abundently clear that if serious travel restrictions had been placed on Italy at the very outset, that the spread and depth of infection in other European countries would not now be so severe.

Yes, there is a balance to be had domestically - not closing schools too soon or shutting down sporting events too soon - I agree with that. My point has always been about international travel.

New world order coming.

Maybe they're really bad and will be released with an official move to delay?

The fact is that this virus is now with us and embedded in,its a question of how many have been infected and how fast and how many more become infected it could be thousands or millions we don`t know! Any reactive action now is probably way too late and the only thing to do is take all sensible precautions and tough it out.The economy will take a hit its just how big a hit and the govt should now be concentrating on giving the correct advise on what to do if you develop symptoms and how to get get through it.From what I can gather covid-19 is similar to flu but the most concerning thing is you can get infected and not show any symptoms at all or at least not for a long time during which a person unknowingly is transmitting it all over the place whilst feeling perfectly well. The best course of action could be to let nature take its course and our bodies develop their own immunity for those that go down with it.The human body is a remarkable laboratory that can develop its own defences and immunity to all sorts of things. Its inevitable  that there will be casualties both in human terms, the economy and probably the nhs.The govt have to accept this and formulate plans to minimise the impacts. So far they have not done much at all and whatever they do from now on is going to be too little too late.

Here is the problem:

British Airways has sent an email to all of its staff asking them to take voluntary unpaid leave, after cancelling all flights to and from Italy until 4 April

Other airlines have taken similar measures.

To get from today's 373 to 756 in six days time would only require us to have 60 new cases each day, which looks easily possible.

To maintain the rate of increase you'd obviously expect the daily cases to rise gradually each day to circa 100 cases per day by the start of next week.

From today's Corriere Della Sera (google translate):

- Coronavirus can severely affect even the youngest . Statistics show that Lombardy, the region with the most cases of contagion: of the 440 most serious patients admitted to intensive care on 9 March, 8% are between 25 and 49 years old, 33% between 50 and 64, the 37% between 65 and 74, 22% over 75 years.

  - Those who are young have more weapons to fight the virus : the Resuscitation treatment involves shock therapies (with cocktails of antiviral drugs, antibiotics and, experimentally, those used to treat HIV) easier to bear for who does not have a physique already weakened.

- For the treatment to be successful, a combination of three factors must work : vital therapies (hydration, artificial feeding, etc.); treatments with the experimental drug cocktail; the absence of subsequent complications (to be avoided with anti-thrombosis prophylaxis, tests to detect the occurrence of bacterial overinfections of the lungs, etc.).

- A significant contribution to the chances of recovery gives it the absence of other pathologies : it means that, in addition to the lungs, the other organs work well. - In a young physique, it is more difficult for problems during treatment to other organs such as the heart, liver and kidneys.

- Critical but stable conditions are a good sign : "Patient One" had to stay in therapy for almost three weeks. This for doctors is a sign of how the virus evolves: the worsening is rapid, there is a long phase of stabilization, then the beginning of the improvement. Mattia is now in the sub-intensive care unit of San Matteo and is in the phase that doctors call weaning, in which the shock therapies are gradually suspended. His breathing is autonomous and semi-conscious. From Mojoli and Bruno a clarification: "The" Patient One "is the symbol of the fact that Coronavirus can be healed even in very serious conditions - they say -. But for us all patients are like "Patient One" ».
