I have been reading up on behavioural science - an absolutely fascinating subject.

The interesting thing is this (and I am hoping this is what is behind the Uk government's approach) - if people change their behaviour voluntarily, it is far, far more effective than if they are told not to do something by government edict - that is just human nature. Take Italy - when it leaked out that the Italian Government was going to quarantine Lombardy, it caused a mass exodus of people from the north as thousands travelled south the night before to avoid it, this spreading the epidemic ever deeper across Italy and forcing the government then to extend the restrictions to the whole of Italy.

Just reading a local FB group. Parents with kids at a school where a pupil is positive are outraged about the situation. Many are keeping their kids at home. The current situation can't be sustained much longer IMO.

i also imagine shutting everything down ala Italy would have a much bigger impact on the economy than allowing 60% of the population to become infected. If an estimated 10,000 are already infected, quarantine measures will be completely pointless at this point. They haven’t done much in Italy because they already had an undetected epidemic. All they’re really doing is f*cking up their already fragile economy for no real reason. 

for the most part I’m pretty satisfied with how things are going here. People might self-isolate for a couple of weeks but on a longer-term basis it just isn’t feasible bar highly draconian measures.

What does that mean?

Most schools in Germany closing:

Until the beginning of the Easter holidays on April 6th, all kindergartens, schools and Kitas (daycare centers) will shut their doors in 13 of 16 of Germany's states: Bavaria, Berlin, Saarland, Schleswig-Holstein, Saxony-Anhalt, Hesse, Hamburg, Bremen, Baden-Württemberg, Thuringia, Lower Saxony, North Rhine-Westphalia, and Rheinland-Palatinate.

This means that educational institutions will effectively be closed until April 20th, or the end of the holidays. 

Saarland first announced the closures late on Thursday, which state leaders said was due to its more vulnerable situation as a border state with France.

Bavaria and Berlin, both which have had several individual closures, announced Friday morning that they were also temporarily shutting down schools, with the other states following suit throughout the day.

You are trying to achieve something that is not achievable.

You still seem to think that there's a route out of this that does not involve the majority of any county's population not getting this virus. You also seem to think there's something that could have been done before now that could have prevented that.

And the advice from Germany is still that 70% of the population will get the virus. Given that tallies with what our Government are saying, what is it that they are doing that you think we should be doing?

The Welsh health minister lets the cat out of the bag:

Up to 20,000 people in Wales could die amid the coronavirus outbreak in a worst-case scenario, the country's health minister has said.
