I don't think the underground should be closed, it wouldn't be necessary if the other lockdown measures were enforced. No other cities have shut their metro AFAIK. It needs to be there for key workers. The above ground transportation wouldn't work because people denied the tube will just get in their cars and clog the streets up. Another option is to make the underground key workers only

Frankly I can only assume the UK government has managed to pick duff experts. Considering that Britain has some of the "best in the world" it does make one wonder what is going on. Wasn't Kitchener considered one of the best Generals in the world after he slaughtered the savages of the Sudan?

With elderly parents who I love dearly to consider, I very much did consider the emotional impact.

To give some context - which I feel is necessary, as I'm alarmed at being inferred to be some callous monster lacking both empathy and critical thinking - I was making the comment on the back of a real sense of fear that we could see unprecedented economic collapse, which would ultimately lead to far more deaths than 250k.

As I also said yesterday, there is no good outcome possible here.

If that happens, or it is say November when football starts, then rather than this season being unfinished and the 2020-21 season starting, it may be the case that they finish this season off and the 2020-21 season is cancelled.

You are right of course that there are no good outcomes here and actually I agree that the economy should be taken into account. If it ever came to a choice though between 'letting' thousands of people to die and taking a big economic hit (which could be repairable), I think it should be an easy decision to make.

From my own point of view it always looked risky to have such an approach to an at least partially unknown disease when the downside is potentially catastrophic, especially when somewhere like Lombardy was struggling so much. 

Although not normally a fan of him, I have been impressed by Jeremy Hunt in this crisis. I guess he knows only too well how stretched the NHS is and how it will struggle if the workload suddenly explodes.

If we have to stay home for prolonged periods I think Internet will be very useful in many ways. I also think people underestimate the potential positive impacts:

• a slower pace of life and more resting


• many people will spend more quality time with their kids and their pets


• new hobbies will be found and old ones revisited


• community spirit might be rekindled

If there is no time for a full season then you can't have a full season. Maybe they could have a half season if time allowed, ie the top 10 in the 2019-20 season premier league play each other home and away, an 18 game season for them, or you just play each team once. What happens depends on the timescale though.

I agree. People on social media acting surprised that Glastonbury in June is cancelled. I’m assuming that nothing I’ve got booked (thankfully not that much) will go ahead before 2021 at the earliest. We are in this for a year or more I reckon.
