We know a significant number require hospital treatment and a sizeable proportion of those require intensive care.

We know the mortality rate amongst the elderly and vulnerable is very high.

We know that one person infects on average three more.

It doesn't take much to work out how fast this could get out of control without containment action.

He is talking about other countries where the curve is coming down. Most of these countries have enacted much forceful measures.

If I was one of those people thinking this wasn’t too bad, after watching that embrassing tulipshow of just go to the pub.

Utterly embrassing

Astonishing. Absolutely astonishing. If we'd handled this properly to begin with we would have been doing that all along.

Vallance says the measures in place should have an impact on the rate of growth of the epidemic.

You would expect the epidemic to come down. Then you can move to a phase where you test and trace.

Probably one of the most appalling press conferences I have ever witnessed

It seems inconsequential to some I realise but having to deal with young people in tears as their chance to shine in end of year exams has been removed from them to be replaced by what appears to be poorly thought out un-policeable alternatives is deeply saddening.

Surely it can't be difficult to make a clear statement that nobody will be disadvantaged by the closing of schools and cancellation of GCSE & A-level exams and that arrangements will be put in place with sufficient notice once conditions allow.

Leaving a void where there needs to be really good communication and reassurance is not clever.

I am almost certain Boris was slightly drunk during that press conference.

I am being completely serious.

A clue to London more severe resrrictions was in the fact he said that the press conference was probably going to have to be done remotely

The figures from Lombardy were not good today:

  • An increase in the number of new infections

  • They hit their ICU capacity of 1006 beds and had to transfer 29 cases to other areas

  • They plan to have ~1250 ICUs by the end of the week

  • The Milan numbers were worse: 634 new hospital admissions vs 300 on Wed

The really tragic figures though are more than 3,000 hospital staff infected and 118 of them have already died including 14 doctors. Some of them were retired ICU doctors who answered the call to arms.

The numbers on the governement website have been updated:

It says that 144 have died in the UK and that 3229 have tested positive.

Thats an increase of +603 positive tests

London will not be locked down because of the effect on the value of sterling and the interest charged on government borrowing.

For the first time during this crisis, I’m feeling really frustrated, angry and upset.

I am seeing people out and about drinking in pubs and having a good time while I have the misfortune of locking myself away for 12 weeks.

These people are putting so many people at risk. It’s my birthday next week and have had to cancel all my plans. I’m doing my bit for me and this country.

But I am ashamed of people who believe this is nothing serious and are carrying on as normal.

I am ashamed at how our PM is handling this during our darkest hour in modern times and I am ashamed of the British public.

The horrors due to unfold in this country over the coming weeks doesn’t bare thinking about. People who are out drinking now and having a good time will have blood on their hands.

Goodness. why can't he give a straight answer. It is "don't know yet" that is fine:

Q: Is there any evidence young people are being affected worse than expected?

Whitty says most people who get this experience just a mild illness.

Older people get it more severely, he says.

But he says that does not mean that there will not be severe cases amongst some young adults.
