Went to the local shop (for local people). to collects some stamps and a local paper for elderly parents who are isolating themselves . They are now enforcing distancing. They are limiting people in the shop to a certain level (one only goes in when one comes out. Raj is also actively preventing hoarding. One bog roll pack per person and they are refusing to let people buy daft quantities of anything else.
On the other side, they have a network of helpers in the village who are taking 'phone orders and arranging delivers for older people who are quarantining them selves. Local / community knowledge ensures nobody "takes the piss",
This is what has to happen. A section of the community can't be relied upon to behave in a civilised way so they must be prevented from allowing their damned selfish behaviour from impacting on other, vulnerable people.
I think key workers (like the nurse in tears on the TV) need to be issued with a special pass to make sure they get a place in front of the idiots in the food queue - there must be a way to arrange this with the supermarket delivery network.
We are heading for a command economy IMHO out of necessity. The free-market free-for-all is letting people down and will result in major problems in its own right if allowed to continue. I am prepared to bet a sizeable sum that a high proportion of the stuff that is currently being panic bought will end up in teh wheelie bin
