I read in The Times there are increasing concerns about the UK's balance of payments (or current account as called these days) becoming a problem.

As coronavirus outbreaks surge worldwide, research teams are racing to understand a crucial epidemiological puzzle — what proportion of infected people have mild or no symptoms and might be passing the virus on to others. Some of the first detailed estimates of these covert cases suggest that they could represent some 60% of all infections.

The exasperating thing, Caz, is they could probably have done it in the time they spent talking about it! It's a very successful well tried procedure now. Not quite so basic as when my Dad had it 30+ years ago - and it went well then.

On the other hand, having it done under the current circumstances will lower his resistance and put him at risk, so now may not be a good time anyway.  Between a rock and a hard place comes to mind!

I heard this said in the media, Beast, and it would be good news if it were true, as chloroquine is cheap as chips, used as an antimalarial for years. However, my natural caution makes me doubt that a once-popular anti-parasite medication should just by chance manage to tackle a Coronavirus like CO-19. But it must be true. Trump says so. I hope he is right and it proves to work.

I recall on the datasheets of the chloroquine I use to take in the 70s that "psychotic episodes" were amongst the possible side effects. Nigerians seem to be opting to self medicate with it - which may prove to be a bad idea.

However, read the story and see what you make of it.

He had little taste for the accusations of " fake new" following his recent remarks evoking the effectiveness of chloroquine, an antimalarial known since the 1930s, against the coronavirus. Didier Raoult, director of the IHU Méditerranée Infection, then referred to a Chinese study according to which this treatment would reduce the time it takes to carry the virus to four days, against 14 to 20 days without treatment. But in the absence of a sufficiently large cohort and an in-depth analysis of side effects, this study was decried by certain researchers and the news was even presented as fake news by French media and, for several hours, by the site from the Ministry of Health.

After six days of treatment, the virus disappeared in 75% of the patients tested

Nothing to discourage the professor ranked number one worldwide among experts in communicable diseases according to the latest Expertsace ranking. On the contrary, he launched within his establishment a new clinical trial including 24 patients, with administered doses lower than the Chinese trial: 600 mg per day against twice 500 mg in China. And the results are very encouraging. After six days of treatment with Plaquenil - one of the trade names for hydroxychloroquine - only 25% of patients are carriers of the virus, compared to 90% in the control group. Better still, when you combine hydroxyhloroquine with azythromycin, an antibiotic known for its antiviral effects, this figure is almost zero. "However, everyone who dies dies with the virus. No longer having the virus changes the prognosis . " And this shorter porting time of course has an impact on the risk of contagion. The good news is also that this treatment is inexpensive and easy to produce. As for the side effects, they exist but are relatively known and controlled according to the dosages adopted, assures the professor.

But still, the malaria drug should protect you if you get it so you don't need to panic

Thousands more beds, ventilators and extra healthcare staff will be available from next week to aid the fight against coronavirus thanks to a deal between NHS England and independent hospitals, the NHS has announced.

The extra resources, including nearly 20,000 staff, will also help the NHS deliver other urgent operations and cancer treatments.

The deal - the first of its kind - includes the provision of 8,000 hospital beds across England, nearly 1,200 more ventilators, more than 10,000 nurses, over 700 doctors and over 8,000 other clinical staff.

In London it includes over 2000 hospital beds, and over 250 operating theatres and critical beds.

Then restrict them to those of economic value. I'm saying its an ethical choice. A health service will only "collapse" if you want it to. Look at India. Plebs are dying in the street from dysentery all the time and Nobody gives a f*ck

If I get CO-19 and die I will be mighty pissed off in my final lucid moments because I nearly died after surgery last year and spent some time in ICU. That cost the NHS a lot - though I will say it would have cost them a lot less if their had listened to me when I first presented.

I will be pissed off to be triaged away from ICU - however I am 70 and high risk. I am enjoying life to the full and don't want to pack it in just now when I still have a lot to give. And, BTW, my survival is worth something to the economy, I pay tax, I save, I spend, I create employment, I will pass money on when I go which will be spent. Nevertheless, I am a realist and know that things may not work out well, so I have an Advance Decision [Living Will] in place. In other words, for the sake of family, friends and the NHS staff I have already consented to have the plug pulled when we get to a defined point. In a phrase "It's the right thing to do." An ethical choice.

I just hope the sod who gets my slot is not one of the hamstering black-marketeers with a trolley!

Which is why I brought up the need to increase our food production this year beginning this spring while we still have a window. Devonian and others understand this but I sense there is still the idea that the virus will be over by Easter especially with Boris’s 12 weeks and it’s over optimism. And then we’ll all be able to head to Rock in August for a jolly good blowout to celebrate Victory.

No. We need to prepare for a siege economy. Yes there are strategic stocks in obscure locations that get rotated which we can use but in the meantime...

This country is a disaster waiting to happen. These people will find someone to blame other than themselves.

All retail outlets need to be closed from Monday. This cannot continue.
