He's saying the cure (closing down the economy) is worse than the medical problem.

Hi xioni

My real fear wrt the economy in the long run is that from some of what I am hearing, we could be facing the sort of situation again that we were not far short of a century ago, namely the Wall Street Crash of 1929 and the depression that came after it which lasted for much of the 1930s.

Even once the worst effects of this virus on human health have gone, whenever that is, I fear that the economic damage could take many, many years to repair, if full repair is even going to be possible.

Hope you stay safe and well!

I suspect the businesses that survive will really boom as people catch up and new companies will fill the gaps left by those that went bust. I suppose that is one of the benefits of market forces. But that is on a more local scale compared to the effect on Government spending. Surely income tax will rise and it should have before all this to have funded the contingency for such a pandemic. Their shortsighted outlook has cost them dear. I'm surprised there has been no talk of suspending Brexit. Why spend even more money and cause more uncertainty? People will surely be looking for stability and a comfort blanket after this hammer blow.

Any idea about construction sites? Without Boris stating we can't return to site I'm still liable for delay penalties i.e thousands of pounds per week!!

So, does that rule out the likes of butchers and bakers that sell food? Most people around here rely on such shops for their ‘essentials’.

UK death count does look like it's beginning to roll off. Good to see but God knows why given our late response.

US, France, Spain trajectories still looking bad.

I wonder if he’s aware of the reputational damage?

I think it will be another blow to his reputation because he’s already been tarred.  Nobody mentioned that he’d offered his lorries and drivers to help supermarkets distribute to stores, because nobody wants to un-tar him.  That’s life!

Can anyone clarify what is meant by gatherings in public of no more than two people?

I understand only going for walks with members of your household.  But  gatherings of no more than two, effectively means I could meet my sister and go for our morning power walk, even though she doesn’t live with me.  A little confused about that and can’t find anything about it.  We’re suspending our walks until we’re sure.

Re the walks Boris made an effort to say no more than groups of two unless it is your own household . To me that means you could meet someone as long as you stayed more than 2 metres. I would only do if it was really neccesary for mental/health wellbeing though.

Some queries I cannot find the answer to and perhaps someone might be able to assist:
Car MOT due 9 April. I would have to drive 3/4 mile drop off and either walk back or get a lift from someone else I dont live with as we only have 1 car in the household. What to do?

Gas safety check on a rental house is due next week, what to do.  Can it be postponed, i percieve the risk as low.

Tenant is moving out of another rental house 31st March. They have all but moved out now anyway. They will need the deposit back in these difficult times but I would need to check the house first and secure it for piece of mind. What to do.

Here’s another point!  My sister and I work together.  She doesn’t drive. I drive us both to work, so how would that work.  We’re not at work today but are expecting to be working from home, in my conservatory, on a job that needs two people!
