Could be wrong but it sounds like another horrendous mess up by the government. If Labour and Lib Dems will agree to it, the time for a government of national unity has come. In fact I think Johnson needs to consider stepping down as PM.

That sounds like an idea worth pursuing.  If supermarkets are closed there should be much less traffic on the roads and delivery vans should be able to get to customers more quickly.

The few vans out on the road were in fact either supermarket delivery vans, which were zipping about as there was little traffic, or big vans delivering to the supermarket.

No - it clearly suggests that they have not received the information from the Government which supposedly wrote to all 1.5 million people early in the week. It it was able to do that, then it was surely able to pass these names and addresses onto the supermarket. As Asda says: "Once we’ve received the information from the UK Government, we will email these customers to offer first access to delivery slots". It doesn't say that it has the information and is now trying to plug it into its systems.

While this could conceivably be Asda trying to pass blame onto HMG, it does suggest that this is another case of the Govt overpromising and not delivering.

Criticising the govt is not very trendy and it's just whinging and blame game by armchair experts with the benefit of the hindsight. We rightly condemn the authoritarian bast$ards in China, but bypass our own very subtle issues:

I've just had what will be the last Tesco delivery for many weeks! The same cheery lady as ever, who was really grateful to me that I was able to take my delivery over an hour early (I'd booked it before lockdowns, when I assumed I'd still be at work - I was of course even more grateful that she came with the delivery). She said that there are queues throughout the time Tesco is open, so bang goes my plan of turning up when they're less busy!

Pretty much everything I ordered was there, and as a bonus it came in "bags for life" - 7 of them, all free of charge.

One of the markers I look for, supply wise, is the date on the loaves I get. Usually it's only 2 or 3 days (hence when I'm there in person I nab a loaf from the back - 4 days if you're lucky).
When I went in just before the lockdown (amidst the panic-buying days, albeit I was there super early) there were hardly any loaves - and those that were there were dated a full week out! IE as fast as they put them on the shelves, people were grabbing them.

The last time I was there was last week, at 6 in the morning (can't do that now, as they don't open 'til 😎, the bread was more plentiful and 6 days in date - i.e. they actually had enough stock to keep some "out back".

The loaf today is 5 days out... which would suggest they're getting back to normal supply-wise. Funny how something that doesn't last long was panic-bought... I guess the bins this week are full of mouldy loaves!

Of course, the queues are the big downer.... standing in a cough-lottery for 20 minutes is neither fun nor safe, but there aren't many alternatives if you're after specific items.

no sign of Boris' letter either.. we were told it would be dropping on door mats earlier this week... maybe he is rewriting it? Shocking reports on the World At One about Care Homes.. having both a mother and a mother in law in care homes in Chichester and Tonbridge Wells, I was listening keenly.. I have no issue with the fact that it is highly unlikely that any resident in a CH would be taken to A & E... and that in reality care homes will become hospices (there is a whole separate issue about whether carers all have the necessary skills etc and safety equipment to provide end of life care) What is the real scandal is the staffing shortages and that more and more care homes rely on agency staff who are dipping in and out of mulitple care homes on different and in some cases, same days of the week... A recipe for disaster... and I'm afraid to bring Brexit into this debate.. but Brexit is one of the reasons why we are now so reliant on agency staff in care homes...

Incidentally, no matter how badly you may think things are going, at least we're not in the same situation as Ecuador. They're leaving bodies in the street out there!

Baseless' 5G conspiracy theory leads to burning of masts

UK mobile network providers have warned against the spread of "baseless" conspiracy theories linking coronavirus to 5G, after videos purportedly showing masts on fire were posted on social media.

West Midlands Fire Service said eight firefighters attended an incident on Thursday evening, involving a 70-foot tower on a telecommunications site in the Sparkhill area of Birmingham - though a spokesman said the cause was yet to be identified and could not confirm whether the mast in question was 5G.

A West Midlands Police spokesman said: "We're aware of a fire involving a phone mast, but are awaiting further details on its cause."

Several videos claiming to show 5G towers on fire were posted to a page on Facebook, which encouraged others to do the same.

The page was created on Thursday and taken down by Facebook on Friday morning.
