Believe it or not China are not good at copying things that really matter and have been trying for many years like twt for defence helix for defence for aircraft iot for broadcast high power magnetrons for cancer machines all of which are just a few with the former 95% British domination.

They buy but can’t copy the secrets of the procedures and frequencies.

I estimate that it would take upwards of five years to remove our dependency on Chinese factories. Even then there's a problem with accessing components and raw materials because it would be naive to expect China not to 'run interference' to stop its export markets becoming self-sufficient or sourcing from 'friendly nations'. I wouldn't put it last the Chinese to use their geopolitical presence and growing military might to make life difficult.

More and more reports from tourist hotspots, especially in Cornwall & Devon, that scumbags are arriving at their second homes for Easter.

Hearing that some councils have set up hotlines UK report these self-entitled arseholes.

Let's hope the cash-starved public purse reaps some money before sending them back. Pity they can't confiscate the homes and give them to local people priced out of ownership.

I really can't believe you are serious. The western way of life is sustained by goods supplied by China at lower cost than we could possibly make them. China's manufacturing capacity has been built up over decades and we can't replace it overnight or in the foreseeable future. Even if we could the goods would be at vastly higher cost.  You are in cloud cuckoo land.

This pandemic offers a golden opportunity to reevaluate. I'd say 'once in a generation' but it's more signficnant even than that.  A realisation that we are doing ourselves no favours in having a growing and sustained addiction to imported consumer goods is overdue.

I worked for a big U.K. defence company e2v( calibration) before I looked after the school Peter for many years they have tried to be crafty many times and have come unstuck we used to do a gridded tube (vacuum tube) for example years ago which used to drive a laser machine they tried to copy many many times but got so desperate because we supplied them they ended up paying 3 million to move the U.K. facility just over the road.

You really are a fan boy aren't you?

They are unelected, simple. They have no mandate to enforce draconian measures like this. And have they really done any better than the Tories? In what way have they?

And there is nothing 'cynical' about my suggestion. It is what it is.

Other thing they try to do is buy copper already 2 largest after Chile so some of the U.K. and USA struggle for specialist copper for production military use.

Here's the Telegraph's modelling of new cases. I'd be astounded, astonished, amazed if we have fewer than 100 cases each day by the end of the month!

Further  to Justin's comments early, I saw some geriatrics   playing improvised golf  on my walk - not much evidence of distancing going on !!  Not sure if they are "special" or "numb skulls".

Guess she didn't have the balls to take charge while the turd is hitting the fan, with her having to deal with something a bit more than Brit hating identity politics which is about the sum of her 'talents'.

What a total waste of our time and our money that last election was. But then, we shouldn't be surprised at that, given just how unaccountable our corrupt, self serving, overly funded establishment is to the Irish public.

Yes that is always the danger when the Americans took over I decided to take a package at that time because it meant working basically 5    Years for nothing But also had another E2v job offer I had to sign the official secret acts when I left which basically means I can’t talk about specific frequencies or specialist materials or procedures was then told if I changed my mind in future I could come back but to be honest I don’t miss the stress at my age.

Thyratons are a good example that China just can’t make for love nor money and when they do they last very little time.
