We genuinely do live in unprecedented times and dealing with the economic fallout is very difficult for the government, setting up new systems does take time etc. However, the revelations from Sharma today are worrying.

The Beeb raises an interesting quirk with the figures - minorities are suffering worst from this.

I'd be interested to see whether the stats apply in my borough, too, which is 97% white.... but as there's no hospital with A&E in my borough (despite the popualtion being around 150,000) I guess there's no way of knowing!

"Only 14% of people in England and Wales are from ethnic minority backgrounds, according to the 2011 census.

However, the Intensive Care National Audit and Research Centre found that 34% of more than 3,000 critically ill coronavirus patients identified as black, Asian or minority ethnic."

This has been mentioned before.  Ethnic minorities tend to live with extended families in the same household, so the mix of ages and more people per household could make a difference as well as their religious activities.

Does the media lead public opinion or is the opposite true? At the moment it's clear! Appetite for the lockdown remains strong according to opinion polls. In fact people are rightly fearful of the corona virus and therefore want the restrictions to remain in place. However, publishers are taking an absolute hammering and are increasingly keen to move the agenda on. Hence we are hearing more about people who will die from other causes, issues with domestic violence and how the poor will suffer the most. There is of course some truth in all of those things but perhaps the credibility of publishers would be increased by admitting their views are partly influenced by their own financial considerations.

I know the UK has a population more than ten times that of Denmark but even so those stats are low. How has Denmark managed to manage the virus to those levels?

A lot of discussion this morning about the NHS app-ocalypse which is being developed and will presumably make use of the Google - Apple api. It needs a take up rate of at least 60% to be of use. Singapore has tried a similar thing but according to the ST only 1 in six people have installed it on their pocket computer. In the UK I wonder whether the psychological implications have been thought through? Imagine constantly checking for notifications to say you have been in proximity of a person with the corona virus symptoms. Ouch!

I absolutely think we are to become the worst affected country in Europe, because of the decisions made by the UK Government in the early days of the crisis. It really is a scandal and we are very much in the process of paying the price.

I’d love for someone to challenge the statistics presented in that Twitter thread. Just look at the difference between us and the ROI.

And yes, before someone else says it, hindsight is of course a wonderful thing. I get that.

How much infection must have been spread and how many of those shoppers might well be in hospital now.  I wonder how much that has contributed to our death rates.  Us Brits did more panic buying than other countries!

But latest Observer poll puts the Govt on 61%, so perhaps nothing matters. They can literally kill thousands each week and the morons will still vote for them!

Victoria Park yesterday -  London is going to struggle based on population density if nothing else.

The parks up here aren’t too bad - I’ve been avoiding the paths as much as possible.

However - it’s important to criticise and hold the Government to account when necessary. I think most agree now that we acted too slowly at the start of this crisis, everything happened a week or so too late and we are now paying the price.

I know that it is easy for anyone to be a so-called armchair critic and I know that hindsight always gives 20/20 vision. However, the warning signs from China, Asia and Italy were evident for many weeks before the UK government first raised the alarm in this country. My guess is that having reached the UK in late January at the latest, it was probably spreading quite widely among communities in England and then elsewhere in the UK throughout February. Yet, we heard very little if anything from HMG at that time about the preparations they were making.

But I think if it's a choice between being informed about something that could make you seriously ill or kill you or being momentarily distracted by a message then it's not really a difficult choice, is it?
