Something I have been wondering for a while is how big a factor were the Chinese New Year celebrations back in late January in the worldwide spread of the disease.


By this time, the Chinese government knew full well that there was a major health crisis developing in their country and it was around time that Wuhan was put into lockdown. I imagine though that many people would very likely have already left the country to travel to many other locations in the world before the Wuhan lockdown came into force.

My sister in law runs a catering business in Macau which includes cafes and franchised outlets. The former Portugese colony returned to Chinese ownersihp about the same time as we returned HK. Her business relies massively on Chinese coming across the border from Guang Dong Province for her popular products and I know her business was decimated in January as were the Casino businesses which its economy relies on, Macau was excellent at isolating itself because it can only be reached from HK via a bridge and a ferry and China from the controlled border with Guang Dong which was closed by the Chinese at the end of January.


The Chinese New Year was from the end of January to February 12th. As you say, I suspect the biggest problem was not then but well before that with people travelling to Western capitals to celebrate the New year, often leaving in December to incorporate our Christmas and be there with relatives. At that time some may well have been infected and carriers without realising it.


So what plans did we make in those two months between Mid-January and Mid March? Not a lot by the looks of it!

I don’t think I’ve ever felt as patriotic as I do at the moment. I don’t think I’ve ever felt as much love & admiration towards the UK population. I’ve been moved to tears when clapping on my doorstep, thinking about those who work in the NHS and in care homes etc. I also think this crisis has gone some way to bring the 4 nations of the UK closer together - at the moment we feel like very much one country. 


However - it’s important to criticise and hold the Government to account when necessary. I think most agree now that we acted too slowly at the start of this crisis, everything happened a week or so too late and we are now paying the price. 


And yes I know you know all this. :D

Agree about feeling patriotic Joe!  I feel very proud of my country and our people for showing such strength and unity.  I’m impressed by our achievements and I think a lot of people are starting to believe in us as a nation after so many years of negativity.  I just hope this ‘can do’ attitude stays with us and we can start to build our industry once this is over.

Does the media lead public opinion or is the opposite true? At the moment it's clear! Appetite for the lockdown remains strong according to opinion polls. In fact people are rightly fearful of the corona virus and therefore want the restrictions to remain in place. However, publishers are taking an absolute hammering and are increasingly keen to move the agenda on. Hence we are hearing more about people who will die from other causes, issues with domestic violence and how the poor will suffer the most. There is of course some truth in all of those things but perhaps the credibility of publishers would be increased by admitting their views are partly influenced by their own financial considerations.

 As I've repeatedly said I didn't want to have any association with the Cheltenham Festival this year. Normally I run a feature on TWO and provide a few quotes about the weather prospects to the media. This year I thought it would be wrong to do that. In years to come people will look back at what happened.

The real warning to our government IMO was when the disease began to get out of control in Italy. That was the point when any thoughts that the disease might not spread much, if at all, beyond the far east should have been dispelled.


I know that it is easy for anyone to be a so-called armchair critic and I know that hindsight always gives 20/20 vision. However, the warning signs from China, Asia and Italy were evident for many weeks before the UK government first raised the alarm in this country. My guess is that having reached the UK in late January at the latest, it was probably spreading quite widely among communities in England and then elsewhere in the UK throughout February. Yet, we heard very little if anything from HMG at that time about the preparations they were making.

I wonder if they are doing exit questionnaires of Corona patients when they are discharged. A question I would like asked is "How do you think you contracted the virus?" "Where, from who or what and when"


This could prove very useful information in prevention and control of wave 2 if there is one or any subsequent outbreak.


It would also be quite comforting if a lot of the answers was whilst I was jostling in the supermarket whilst getting my stockpile!

Went on another 11K perambulation this morning.


As I started at 7 AM hardly anyone around.  


As I retuned near the village later though I encountered various individuals and parties.  Most  were fine, however I got annoyed by one (older) woman.  It was a narrow path, so I reversed up and found a small alcove in the hedge to let her pass at 2M.  Firstly her out-of-control dogs  bounded up to me.  Now I don't mind dogs, but some people are terrified by them -  extremely poor form IMHO.  Then she whipped out her mobile and took a call  while standing still, while I was still  in the hedge with trigs poking into me waiting for her to come pass !


She eventually "sailed by" in the middle of the path  reducing my carefully calculated 2M to a 1M and a bit  with no thanks you or even an acknowledgement of my existence - I  was p*ssed off after the 'phone incident so purposely waited silently !

This is being played out in the increasingly irritating and repetitive "journalist" (loose terminology) questions during the daily briefings with all  desperate to get a "scoop". As well as that more papers are offering digital subscriptions.


Media lead public opinion is not a new phenomena though, just think the keyword "recession", you need to look no further.
