DON'T USE ASDA click and collect !! At the start of the lock down my wife was forced to do a "normal" shop in our usual Tesco which involved a lot of queuing. We've got by since then but eventually managed to get a click and collect in our local Asda. Collected it this morning and it was diabolical in terms of safety. Being in the vulnerable category i am particularly careful. First of all there was nothing on line or signage where to collect from so we had to ask somebody. They said you had to go inside. So we parked and went inside and again had to ask what to do. We were directed to - wait for it, a TOUCH screen where we had touch in our order number.  No disinfecting wipes no staff controlling it, nothing. Then despite having used their mobile app for the fast collect we had to wait by this machine for ten minutes for somebody to find the order. No social distancing marked out around it. Right next to an escalator and in the entrance to an isle. Shoppers obliviously on their phones walking two foot passed us. No sterilisation of trolley handles either.  A disgrace. WOuld have been safer to just go shopping. At Tescos apparently they fetch it out to you in the car park.

I totally agree - take the hit now , nothing wrong with being over cautious , to have a second or third wave of this would be an absolute disaster .

Trump is planning to accelerate the reopening of the economy. The US could well be the country that puts the "heard immunity" theory to the test. I think the population there will be prepared to accept more deaths than we in west Europe are.

Coffee shops, estate agents and restaurants could be among the first to reopen in the UK as they're deemed the greatest boost to the economy with screens in place or tables at least 6ft apart.

Has anyone modelled how many extra deaths there might have been if a lockdown(s) had not been in place?

I suspect it would have been total chaos without the lockdown and more lives would have been lost.  I’m speculating of course but it does appear the lockdown is serving its purpose.

Has anyone seen any new modelling published since these Imperial graphs did the rounds? (click for larger - bottom one is a zoomed in view of the lower part of the first). Even with a modelled lockdown extended to Sept there's still a massive and unmanageable second wave in the winter. What basis are those calling for various forms of early end to the lockdown using to determine their outcomes?

As you say if they open they would be no longer eligible for the govt loan scheme as well as the furlough scheme.

I should imagine a good few of these small businesses will fold due to this.

Read elsewhere on the internet this morning that Conservative MP Nadine Dorries, who herself has Covid-19 a month ago, had said that the lockdown cannot be lifted fully until such a time as there is a working & safe vaccine against the virus.

She is absolutely right. We will never be 100% safe and life cannot go completely back to normal for any of us until we have this.

Until there is a working vaccine, the only way to control the infection is through periodic loosening and tightening of movement restrictions. There is no other way, since a full lockdown cannot be maintained for 18 months or more. So, restrictions will be eased in the coming weeks as infection rates decline, then after a couple of months, infection rates will climb once more and restrictions will be tightened, then eased once more and so on.

The only guiding strategy is to ensure that the healthcare system (in our case the overly bureaucratic NHS) can cope with the caseload of those needing hospitalisation.

I think we’ll have another three weeks of this and then some measures will be relaxed to test the strain on the NHS and that will determine what we do next.  I think it’s likely those in the ‘shielding’ category will have to continue isolation for some time but otherwise I think we’ll be back to light lockdown with social distancing.  That will mean no large gatherings for a while and no pubs, clubs and restaurants opening yet.
