That may be true, but isn't he self-isolating waiting for test results on the same, which is likely has been caused by himself or family doing something of a similar ilk?

The irony is that there seemed to be much horror when the death toll in Italy unfolded both by the general population and the media.

I totally agree with your thoughts. This is a national tragedy.

The rush to ease lockdown and get the economy running means a lot (not all) have lost sight of the fact so many loved ones have been lost and family’s are no doubt devastated.

We are a bizzare country. We went into full on mourning mode for Diana and yet there doesn’t seem to be a National mourning for all the dead over the last few weeks

Revision to excess deaths figures from the ONS now suggests that COVID-19 has killed more than 52,000 people in the UK.

It's because we are a supine bunch who would rather believe that HMG is 'doing a good job in difficult circumstances' rather than presiding over the greatest health catastrophe since 1918.

A lot of it is English exceptionalism, arrogance, pride and embarrassment. Reflected in the continued support for Brexit. Ploughing ahead with this madness against all available evidence, because its easier than admitting  you were conned

Professor Streeck's study shows the mortality rate to be 0.36, although he thinks it could be lower - between 0.24 - 0.26%. He is of course not talking about New York but about Germany. Nobody knows why the virus seems to be more dangerous in some places than others and there are probably many factors involved in this.

Can you imagine if this was a climate scientist and xioni and Gandalf simply dismissed their ideas? Or are experts only right when they agree with us?

It depends if he's got his figure for the number of people infected correct. As the article show, a small difference in the 'IFR' means a big difference in how many have been infected. How many people do you think have been infected in the UK? 20 million sounds high to me, but do either of us (or he) know until a lot of testing is done? Nope.

A lot of people have died, it doesn't feel like a flu epidemic (well less than 1% mortality) to me. Given we've seen effective lockdowns death would surely be vastly higher without it. But, the truth is neither the proff, or you or me know yet.

A big concern I have is that when a user declares symptoms the app will upload data about himself AND other users it has pinged to the government database. This is the part where I think there could be legal issues.

My own opinion is that I simply don't know and until things become clearer I'll keep an open mind and consider other opinions from across the spectrum.

Oh dear. If confirmed, this is going to cause some anger. I feel some myself - I have elderly members of my own family circle who have been living in complete isolation for weeks, unable to see their own grandchildren, and deprived of all human contact, because of rules put in place based on his recommendations. And then he behaves like this. I note he "acted in the belief he was immune" and was self isolated for "almost two weeks". Wriggle wriggle.

All that said, his personal failings don't affect whether he was right, although whether the papers will be able to make this distinction is doubtful to put it mildly. I suspect the right wing media will crucify him.

Interesting side story from The Times:

https://www.thetimes.co.uk/edition/news/state-sponsored-hackers-trying-to-steal-coronavirus-vaccine-secrets-mrmrlzcst

"Britain and the United States issued a joint warning today that rival states are mounting cyberattacks on research institutions linked to the coronavirus response in an attempt to steal secrets, including vaccine work.

The joint advisory statement comes days after similar warnings from US intelligence officials about state-backed hackers targeting vaccine laboratories on the behalf of governments including China, Russia and Iran.

Britain’s National Cyber Security Centre joined the US Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency in warning that state actors “are actively targeting organisations involved in both national and international Covid-19 responses”.

“These organisations include healthcare bodies, pharmaceutical companies, academia, medical research organisations and local government,” the statement read.

..."

New world order coming.

More worrying is the inability of it to work unless running in the foreground on IOS and the potential to drain the battery on Android devices when running as a foreground service. The Google / Apple api which is being used in many other European countries gets round these issues.

Fail alert but there is some worrying stuff in this article:

Coronavirus outbreak in UK and Europe is caused by a newer 'dominant' type of the virus which mutated to spread faster and could change shape to avoid the immune system or a vaccine, scientists claim

Dr Jonathan Stoye, from The Francis Crick Institute, said: 'Although the functional significance of the changes observed have yet to be fully characterised, the study shows that SARS-CoV-2 can alter its genetic structure in multiple ways as it spreads around the world, a finding likely to have important implications for vaccine development.'

Scientists are still not sure whether people develop long-term immunity after their first bout of COVID-19.

Sir Patrick Vallance, the UK's chief scientific adviser, said it is very unlikely that people would develop total protection after recovering from the illness.
