Did you check the forecast soundings? Here's a better link:

Compare Dover with London. Dover has a marked "nose" even at 15z today, showing the modificatoin of the boundary layer.

London doesn't. London did, however, have a "nose" at 9z and by 12z it was being straightened out. By 15z it's gone - the modification is overriden by mid-late afternoon, in other words.

Tomorrow does look interesting and complex, the inversion looks more shallow and it looks easier to to have more mixing during the critical afternoon hours, but there is also likely to be some more cloud compared to today. My best guess is for ~34C and then 37C on Tue and probably Wed too.

12z Harmonie run.

It correctly predicted 34C in the Herstmonceux area today.

Tomorrow it has 34C in a number of locations with 35C in the London area

ARPEGE also has 35C in the London area

Insane heat towards city's centre around 4pm.. very easily 36-37C!!! I've only experienced heat like that a few times in my life.

My end we did hit 34C but nothing compared to the heat less then a mile away that was shrouding the inner parts.

This is happening across France currently:

Is this the mid level gunk fly in tomorrow’s heatwave ointment?

It supposedly got to 38.3C on the 15th July 1881 at Alton, Hampshire and 37.8C at Alderbury near Salisbury.

It’s a proper WMO and Met Office auto station.
33.5C there now, levelling off. 35 looks unattainable but somewhere might scrape 34.

Once again the Met have gone too high by the looks of it.

12z run from Arome got rid of the residual cloud and it shows 36C at LHR tomorrow (I think it had 35C for today).

This article from Stephen Burt in 2004 is primarily on the 2003 heatwave but has a great section on historic heatwaves, going all the way back to 1881. It covers all the periods listed in my table. It mentions one new entry of 35.0C on 8 August 1911.

So looks like a max of “only” 34.0C today. The Met Office have revised tomorrow’s high to 36 but still plugging away with 37 for Tue and Wed.

I think it will be more like 34.5, 35, 35.3.

Even so a run of six consecutive 34C+ days would be quite impressive.

In fact I’m pretty sure six 34C+ days on the trot would be unprecedented.

GFS raw output for next three days:

Monday: 33C
Tuesday: 34C
Wednesday: 36C
Thursday: 31C

It’s hard to see exact gridpoint for Wednesday on Wetterzentrale. Could even be a 38C
