This reminds me of the tone & gravitas of the first lockdown back in March 2020. All that was missing was the lectern.

I've added a heatwave tracker which will regularly be updated with revised probabilities and actual outcomes.

I work nights and depending on how hot things get on Monday, I might ask for Monday night off work. If it gets too uncomfortable, there's no way I'll sleep Tuesday, not to mention work is like a giant metal oven in a heat wave anyway....

IMO, if the Met Office sees fit for red warning, and there is the real possibility that 40°C will be hit - and quite widely too, the government should just call for all non-essential businesses in England, Wales and the Scottish Borders to close on Monday and Tuesday, citing a "possible danger to life". Calling two emergency bank holidays would probably be sufficient, but there's very little chance any of this will be implemented, unfortunately.

A stay-at-home order would be useless as people will just flood to the beaches or lakes etc, in weather like this, and police will clearly have better things to do than enforce that...

There seems to be a lot of complacency on social media at the moment, and I think a lot of people could be caught out with this. This isn't just a bog-standard summer heat wave that we're used to, it is proper, dangerous heat that has the potential to kill. As much as the weather enthusiast in me wants to see the UK record 40°C, I just hope too many people don't suffer with this.

Probably not a straw in the wind, but the models generally have today peaking at 27C in and around London. Currently only 24C at nearly 2pm. I wonder if today will be undercooked despite being as sunny as forecast. Or one of those late peaks we get on sunny days under moderate upper air temps.

Let’s also not forget. I suspect British farming will be devastated. Live stock will be lost in huge numbers.

These serious warnings have got me thinking.
Does anybody remember a TV drama from what must be at least 15 years ago about an unprecedented heatwave in the UK? I think temperatures were around 40C so much as is being predicted now. The one (harrowing) moment I can remember is a mum leaving her young children in a car in full sunshine to do some shopping and when she returned, they were dead from heatstoke. What was this, somebody must remember.

The amazing thing was the peak heat was in September after a gradually intensifying August warm up.

Think it reached 43. It was a future set up for 2006 triggered by the Euro heatwave of 2003.

Hah- found it.
