Yes pretty annoying. I almost certain the ‘South Farnborough’ weather station is not on the airport site. I think it’s in the Alexandra Rd area.
Maybe the owners are on holiday? Not great timing!

I’ve been at a BBQ in south London today. At 29C people are flagging badly.

The value of thermal mass in housing appears to be completely overlooked! Insulating lightweight small buildings to the hilt might end up being counterproductive with more energy needed to cool them in the future!

Met Office has Leeds at 31c tomorrow and cloudy for most of the day. Seems strange. Perhaps it is just very thin high level cloud forecast.

It would be fascinating to be a climatic architect (or whatever the term is). Design buildings that maximise solar gain and light in winter, and minimise heat ingress in summer.

Interestingly we’re building a barn conversion in France at the moment and after much umming and ahing decided in a metal roof. Counterintuitive, but it loses heat rapidly at night rather than radiating it inwards.

Time for a break from models to enjoy watching the temperatures rocket, thinking we might sneak in a 34c somewhere tomorrow. Last comfortable evening for a couple of days.

A little context with the 1976 comparisons. I was 13 - I remember it well and have detailed records. The primary factor was the lack of rainfall and drought conditions prompted special measures by the middle of July. The heat peaked early July with 35.9C in Cheltenham on the 3rd. I lived near Portsmouth and yes it was hot at times with many days exceeding 30C (but rarely above 33C) but with low humidity most of the time it was liveable. Most of the Summer holidays spent exploring the countryside, river swimming, etc and watering the plants with bath water.

The forecast heat Mon/Tues, however short-lived, is a factor above anything 1976 delivered and will cause problems. Once the air temp exceeds body temp there is a sudden depreciation in your body’s ability to keep cool and heat stroke becomes a much bigger problem.

I have experienced 37/38C in central Florida in early July before, and it goes without saying the humidity was insane - night temperatures at 27C with 100% humidity was an experience i won't forget. I acclimatised very quickly to the point that a week in we had a cloudy overcast day and i was feeling cold despite it being 31C, but without the air-conditioning i don't think i would have managed the nights.
